Parenting is no easy task. It requires much from the human body and does not give any ease. What is a good parent? A good parent is loving, respectful, honest, willing to listen to what their children have to say, etc. A good parent is one that will take care of their children and teach them between right and wrong even if it gets rough. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch is an excellent example of what a good parent should be. Showing respect is one thing Atticus Finch exceeds at. He respects himself by standing by what he believes instead of easily being swayed. In this novel, Atticus represents respect when he decides to help Tom Robinson, who is a black man, with the court case. When Jem and Scout fight he listens to both sides of the story not just one side. For example, when the winter holiday season comes around and Aunt Alexandra, Uncle Jack and Francis come to the Finches, Scout and Francis get in a fight and she starts cussing at him. Uncle Jack told her not to cuss anymore so he spanked Scout. This shocked her because “Atticus doesn’t ever just listen to Jem’s side of it”. (97) Also, Atticus listens to Scout when she rants about her school and her teacher Miss Caroline. Scout does not like the fact that Miss Caroline said she cannot read with Atticus at home anymore. She explains how she is upset about this news and also how Walter Cunningham started her off on the wrong foot at school. (32) Lastly, Atticus listens to what Jem has to say about the justice system. In the novel, Jem is peeved that Tom Robinson lost the case. On the way home from the court house Jem tells Atticus how he thinks it was not right for them to do that.
