Dr. Steve Maraboli, an author once stated, “The truth of your character is expressed through the choice of your actions. This refers to how important it is to develop good character and how it can be an example for others. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch, the father of the protagonist Scout Finch, is man with with great character and example in the novel. Atticus is known as a good father to Jem and Scout, and his example to his children help them grow to be very intelligent young children. Furthermore, Atticus’s role as a very prominent lawyer, especially his will to defend black people like Tom Robinson, sets a great example to the people who are racist. Finally, Atticus, as a citizen of Maycomb uses his character …show more content…
Atticus teaching his children about being in one other’s shoes to understand other help his kids view people and their problems with a more mature eye. Atticus tells Jem after the death of Mrs. Dubose, “You know, she was a great lady… She had her own views about things, a lot different from mine… I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand… She was the bravest person I ever knew.” (Lee 149). Atticus tells Jem that Mrs. Dubose had her own opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. He wants Jem to understand that they can’t judge other people until they know how they feel and understand why they are going through or feeling that way. Explaining this to his son helps Jem see why Mrs. Dubose acted that way and see what she has gone through, therefore being nurtured by his father. Atticus with no doubt plays a role as a good father to Jem and Scout. Additionally, Atticus’s protectiveness of his children help Jem and Scout understand that world can be a truly dangerous place. As the children’s curiosity for Boo Radley grows stronger, When Atticus finds out that Scout is going to the Radley’s house again he lectures Scout,“You aren’t starting that again, are you? If you are, I’ll tell you right now: stop it. I’m too old to go chasing you off the Radley property. Besides, it’s dangerous. You might get shot…You were lucky not to be killed.” (Lee 325). Realizing her father was correct on his explanation of why they should stop going to the Radley’s home, she stops going because she’s surprised of her father’s knowledge about that. Her father’s wise knowledge helps her realize that it isn’t safe in every part of the town. Furthermore, the example that Atticus shows his children really brings out the good in them. After Tom Robinson and Atticus lost
Although deemed by most to be a good parent, Atticus’ lack of supervision affects his children Scout and Jem and even exposes them to danger. Atticus is not a perfect father. He has a full time job that restricts him from being around his kids for most of the day and also puts them in a dangerous position. When Atticus agreed to take on the ‘Tom Robinson case’ he knew full well that he was going to have a lot of tension with people, and even though he did the the right thing by defending an innocent man despite his colour, some may argue that he puts his beliefs before the welfare of his children. This puts the kids in danger because Atticus while losing the case still makes Bob Ewell embarrassed by being shown up like the way he was. This causes a hatred that provokes Bob to hurt Atticus in the deepest possible way, by attacking his children. It was Atticus’ call to decide that he would send Jem to the pageant instead of himself, and that was what ultimately gave Mr. Ewell his chance to get back at Atticus. This shows that Atticus is not the perfect father, if there is such a thing, but proves that even Atticus has flaws or faults to foresee
Caring and noticeable is Harper Lee's, To Kill a Mockingbird take readers to the source of humans action, through faults and experiment, kindness and trouble, hatred and love, and the struggle between blacks and whites. Friends and neighbors of Atticus Finch were not happy with the fight Atticus was putting up to defend the man who was charged for raping a white woman. Not only does Atticus enjoy being a lawyer, Atticus even enjoy being a father of Jem and Scout. Atticus Finch is a excellent character who is known for certain accomplishment and superior. He is known for many stuff. Atticus Finch has remained a hero in modern days for american literature for decades and an honorable figure due to his honesty as a parent, a lawyer, and a respectable community members.
Atticus Finch is a great example for everyone to practice equality and to not judge a book by its cover. Although a father is normally on his child's side, Atticus lets Jem and Scout know that no matter how the person acts or what they look like, they still need to treat them
The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. That is what Martin Luther King said in his last speech before he was assassinated. The literary fiction novel To Kill A Mockingbird wrote by Harper Lee takes place in the fictional Alabama town of Maycomb. The story happened during the period of Great Depression, and people were sorted based on socioeconomic, gender and races. The narrator Scout Finch lives with her brother Jem Finch and father Atticus Finch. In the book, Atticus is a character that is respected by readers because he has a strong sense of sympathy. Atticus is a just and fair lawyer and served several years in the state legislature. As being an attorney with strong moral character and healthy humanitarian principles, Atticus works diligently in the court to defend an innocent person. “It is a sin to kill a Mockingbird.” The innocent person is the mockingbird and Atticus’s mission is to protect the mockingbird. As a stern and gentle father of two children, Atticus teaches Jem and Scout a lot of principles on the way of life and benefit them in the future. His sense of responsibility makes him a good father. Atticus consistently demonstrates empathy throughout the novel To Kill A Mockingbird.
Atticus, the father of Scout and Jem, plays an immensely important role in the children’s maturing by teaching them valuable life lessons that benefit their character and knowledge of how to live in the world. When telling Jem and Scout why Mrs. Dubose acts the way she does, and how he thinks she is one of the most courageous women he knows, he says, “Courage is when you know your licked before you begin but you begin anyway”(128). The children learn that Mrs. Dubose was not a mean, old, wicked lady; she was a person trying to get rid of an addiction, even though it would cause her pain to do so. This entire conversation shows Scout and Jem that people are not always what one perceives them to be, and that one needs to understand why someone does the things they do before they judge
Atticus Finch is a model father created by Harper Lee in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird. He is an important figure in the Maycomb, Alabama Community. He raises his children, Jean Louise Finch (Scout) and Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) with wide sets of morals, disciplines them, and is a true role model. Atticus allows his children to be individuals and does not try to change who they are. He teaches them fairness and equality among many different types of people in Maycomb. He is always teaching his children about how their actions may affect others, then, as a result, devices punishments to teach Scout and Jem valued life lessons. In many situations, Atticus can chastise his children, but he allows them mature and notice their own mistakes
Atticus Finch, the father of Scout and Jem and a lawyer in Maycomb, is a compelling character in To Kill a Mockingbird. He catches the eye of many readers because of his honesty, courage, and his ability to be a outstanding father. We witness these qualities when Atticus defends Tom Robinson, helps his children grow, and the way he conducts himself with the angry white folks of Maycomb, AL. Atticus Finch is one of the main characters in this book portraying a role of a lawyer defending a black man, in a small-town with a majority of white supremacists. This essay will provide examples of the previous three traits to display how Atticus is a compelling character.
To Kill A Mockingbird: The purpose behind Atticus defending an African-American Advocating for one’s diverse morals and ideology is what makes an impact on society. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates this idea through the noble character, Atticus Finch. As the father of two young children, Jem and Scout, Atticus tries his best to raise his children adequately. By schooling them to not judge based on one’s race or background, the children accumulate a considerable amount of wisdom. Their father’s character is persistent, calm, and patient when facing most situations, which may be a result of his line of work.
Atticus explains that “What Mr. Radley did might seem peculiar to us, but it did not seem peculiar to him” (65). Atticus is passing on good values to his children, as he is teaching them to empathize with Mr. Radley, instead of impersonating him in their games. Atticus shows his children a different perspective, by making him “consider things from [Arthur’s] point of view”, who may have different opinions. This allows Jem to understand that each person is different, and people do not often share the same perspectives, which is why Arthur’s actions “did not seem peculiar to him”. Additionally, Atticus tries to give his son an understanding of the irritable Mrs. Dubose. When Jem is angry at Mrs. Dubose, Atticus reminds him that, “She’s an old lady and she’s ill. You just hold your head high and be a gentleman” (133). Although Mrs. Dubose makes several rude remarks, Atticus does not take offense to them, and he continues to treat her with respect. Atticus empathizes with Mrs. Dubose, as she is an “ill” “old lady”,while teaching Jem to “really understand” her current condition. Atticus intends to make his children aware of the different circumstances that others may be
Atticus said that on the off chance that you haven't really encountered the same thing that another person has, or "venture into their shoes and stroll around in them", you aren't legitimized to make a false supposition or judge somebody. Atticus exhibits this when he gets Jem, Scout, and Dill playing around before the Radley house and claiming to be the Radleys. Jem and Scout don't comprehend why Atticus gets so irritated with them until Scout at last meets Boo toward the end of the book. She understands that Boo isn't a startling, unbalanced, frightening man who wounds individuals with scissors, and that he is truly simply a delicate man. The town has fundamentally made a profile of a totally diverse individual on the grounds that they had known so minimal about
“The right way is not always the popular and easy way. Standing for right when it is unpopular is a true test of moral character.”(Moral Quotes). Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird shows strong moral character even when his decisions are unpopular. Atticus Finch is a high class lawyer who took a case to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. His society, being a racist southern town in the 1930s, judged him because of his decision to defend a black man. Atticus can be compared to both Aunt Alexandra and Dollfus Raymond to represent that although, some people fall to the pressures of society and ignore their morality others can rise above it and act on that morality. Harper Lee utilizes the character of Atticus to illustrate that despite
He then holds them responsible for what they do and say. Although his ways are different than the societal standards, Atticus’s involvement with his children is effective for discipline. He does not always discipline them in the same manner, but does so in ways fitting to the circumstances. Atticus chooses particular words to express exactly what his children need to hear in order to mend their ways. Often, he simply expresses his disappointment. Sometimes, he uses firm reprimanding. Once, we see Atticus use his keen intellect, employing what Scout calls “the oldest lawyer’s trick on record” (50) so that Jem admits to “putting [Mr. Radley’s] life’s history on display for the edification of the neighborhood” (49), as Atticus describes it. Scout’s father teaches by example countless times when he reminds her that “it ain’t time to worry yet” (70), even when a fire threatens to sweep away all of their belongings. In addition to his honest discussions with Scout and Jem, Atticus gives them many profound lessons through his intentional interactions with others.
I believe that Atticus Finch is a good parent. A good parent consists of many things, such as honesty, trust, and protection of children. A couple reasons why Atticus Finch is a good parent are that he is very honest with his children, he always tries to protect his children, and last but not least Atticus always lets his children learn from real life experiences, and does not just tell them stories. To begin, Atticus tries to protect Jem by accepting the fact that Bob Ewell fell on his knife, and that Jem did not kill him. The author cites evidence that illustrates Atticus’s acceptance on page 370, “‘Scout,' he said, 'Mr. Ewell fell on his knife.
For father of the year award I nominate Atticus Finch.I nominate Atticus, because he is a man who displays a excellent sense of justice, compassion and faith, all of which are core properties of being a great father. He shows all of these qualities in only a short three years. He shows it when talking mostly when either talking to or about his daughter Scout, or Jean Louise.
Atticus is a great parent. He does many things that make him a great parent such as, being respectful, giving great advice, and he is very caring. To begin with, Atticus does not expect the respect of his children but earns it, this is shown many times, but the best example is when he tells Scout “We’ll go on reading as we always have.” (pg.41) he is showing he respects Scout because he believes she is smart enough to read and agrees more with Scout than her teacher. Secondly, he gives them great advice, when Scout is upset about her teacher telling her not to read, Atticus tells her that she will get along with people better if she can climb into their skin and walk around in it. He makes her understand what is happening in her life and resolves her issue. Lastly, Atticus is very caring.
