In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch is described by his children “Jem and I found our father satisfactory: he played with us, read to us and treated us with courteous detachment” (6). At the start of the book Atticus is not thought of as the best parent. People disapprove of how he raises his children. His children think he is old but, through Tom Robinson’s trial they grow to respect him.

When he says this, he is trying to make the children see that the men who killed Tom did not know him as a person, but as a Negro who committed a crime, so cannot be discriminated upon for doing their job. Along with Atticus’ sense of fairness, his Teaching also characterizes him as a good father to Jem and Scout.

In this novel Harper Lee highlights the prevailing racist attitudes that existed in Alabama in the 1930s. Lee does this by having the parenting style of Atticus, and its impact on his children, stand in contrast to these prevailing racist attitudes. Atticus is a lone parent that has to take care of 2 children, and in my opinion he is a fantastic parent. He doesn’t treat his kids like children, he lets them know stuff that other parents wouldn’t tell their kids. In addition, he doesn’t believe in rumors, he doesn’t accept something for truth just because other do, we can tell this when he says "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... There is no greater love than that of a father for his children. Atticus portrays that so well in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. He cares so deeply for is children and that is expressed through the duration the whole novel. Even though some of Atticus’ actions may put is children in danger he always did is best to keep them safe without shielding them from the problems in the world around them. Atticus is an amazing example of a good father even though he has flaws.

In our story The father, Atticus, is a lawyer who is defending a black man, the period was the 1930’s. As everyone called Atticus a disgrace, he still did what he believed in, Justice. I believe in “To Kill a Mockingbird” the three things you need to raise a child properly is respect towards elders and guests, Realizing that you will not always be right, and lastly being a role model by doing the right thing, by doing what you believe.
