Atticus Finch Is A Good Parent

Atticus’ fairness also shows he is a good father because he believes that everyone deserves a chance to be understood and all have reasons for their actions. For example, after revealing the news to Jem and Scout of Tom’s death, he says, “Depends on how you look at it. What was one Negro, more or less, among two hundred of ‘em? He wasn’t Tom to them, he was an escaping prisoner” (Lee 235). This passage shows Atticus's fairness because he always tries to put himself in other people’s shoes in order to give everyone a chance at being understood, as he teaches Jem and Scout to do. He gave up his respectable reputation among many of the whites in Maycomb to defend Tom Robinson, and still speaks highly of the men who killed him. When he says this, he is trying to make the children see that the men who killed Tom did not know him as a person, but as a Negro who committed a crime, so cannot be discriminated upon for doing their job. Along with Atticus’ sense of fairness, his Teaching also characterizes him as a good father to Jem and Scout.

Atticus is one of the major characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, and he appears in almost every chapter. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout and appears in every chapter. While some might think Atticus is not a proper role model, he is a good role model because he treats everybody with respect, he sees other races as equal, and he fights for equality.

He raises his children, Jean Louise Finch (Scout) and Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) with wide sets of morals, disciplines them, and is a true role model. Atticus allows his children to be individuals and does not try to change who they are. He teaches them fairness and equality among many different types of people in Maycomb. He is always teaching his children about how their actions may affect others, then, as a result, devices punishments to teach Scout and Jem valued life lessons. In many situations, Atticus can chastise his children, but he allows them mature and notice their own mistakes

Research shows that children are more susceptible to commit crimes, fail in maintaining long lasting relationships and develop depression as well as other psychological disorders from the effects of bad parenting. In fact, many people grow up treating others the same way their parents have treated them with reference to their parents’ values, behaviours and attitudes. Harper Lee, an American author, expressed her childhood experiences in Alabama through writing the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In this novel Harper Lee highlights the prevailing racist attitudes that existed in Alabama in the 1930s. Lee does this by having the parenting style of Atticus, and its impact on his children, stand in contrast to these prevailing racist attitudes. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee conveys that Atticus Finch is a great parent because he is not a hypocrite, he has a sense of fairness and he has good morals and values.

As a good father Atticus does a great job disciplining his two children Scout and Jem, when Atticus has the time he spend valuable time with his kids he educates them by reading to them and he teaches his kids that whatever they believe in fight for it. The story’s protagonist, Scout, is a young girl from Alabama whose father, Atticus, is asked to defend an African-American man who is charged with rape. The southern way of life during The Great Depression will not allow Tom Robinson a fair trial, and Scout and her brother Jem are forced to deal with a county’s ignorance and racist attitudes. Although Atticus Finch is consumed by one of the greatest challenges of his career, the lessons he teaches his children in the wake of this trial show his dedication as a good father. He continues to be honest and nonviolent, punishes the children when needed, and he stays nurturing to the both of them.

Throughout the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, although Atticus Finch appears to be a loving and caring father, he proves himself to be more of a friend through the eyes of his children. The author, Harper lee, created Atticus to be a loyal friend to Jem Finch and Scout Finch. Atticus has potential to be a friend to his children because, first of all, the children call him by his first name. Secondly, he seldom scolds his children. Atticus has little or no rules set for his children to abide by. Lastly he does not try to mold his off springs into something they are not, though he does supply them with good advice.

That lawyers name is Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is not just an ordinary father. He teaches his children things no parent of the 1930s, or even the modern time period, would think of doing. His style parenting, compared to modern day parenting and parenting in the 1930s, is unique and is not traditionally the way a parent wants to raise their child.

In life a father plays a huge role in a daughter and son’s life. Whether or not that father plays a good or bad role in his children’s life, he still is a big part of their life. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is the father of Jean Louise Finch, known as “Scout” and her brother Jem Finch. Bob Ewell, is the father of Mayella Ewell. These two characters play a huge role in the novel, as well as their children’s life. Atticus is an Alabama lawyer, he provides his family with what they need. He also educates them, he teaches “Scout” and Jem how to read, he also teaches them to be respectful to everyone, including blacks. Atticus is a lone parent that has to take care of 2 children, and in my opinion he is a fantastic parent. He doesn’t treat his kids like children, he lets them know stuff that other parents wouldn’t tell their kids. In addition, he doesn’t believe in rumors, he doesn’t accept something for truth just because other do, we can tell this when he says "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." this is a great example of why Atticus is a good parent. He remains composed, sympathetic and perceptive even in the most trying times. He doesn’t drink and never yells at his children. He loves his children and would do anything for them, he doesn’t let his

There is no greater love than that of a father for his children. Atticus portrays that so well in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. He cares so deeply for is children and that is expressed through the duration the whole novel. Even though some of Atticus’ actions may put is children in danger he always did is best to keep them safe without shielding them from the problems in the world around them. Atticus is an amazing example of a good father even though he has flaws.

When reading “To Kill A Mockingbird”, Atticus the father in the story has always raised his children to fight for what they believe in, even if other people tried to bring you down. In our story The father, Atticus, is a lawyer who is defending a black man, the period was the 1930’s. As everyone called Atticus a disgrace, he still did what he believed in, Justice. I believe in “To Kill a Mockingbird” the three things you need to raise a child properly is respect towards elders and guests, Realizing that you will not always be right, and lastly being a role model by doing the right thing, by doing what you believe.
