In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” written by Harper lee, one of the main characters Atticus Finch shows the qualities of a good person and “a good father” by how he’s not prejudice, loving and kind. he teaches Jem and Scout life skills, Some of these skills are respecting people who don’t do anything wrong and only help people, teaching them that everyone should be treated equally no matter what colour your skin is. Atticus loves his kids so much that he is scared for them and he tells them that you shouldn’t over react over what someone says. Atticus is a good father because In Chapter 10, the seventh paragraph, Atticus gives his children air-rifles but he doesn’t teach them how to shoot and says ‘I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the …show more content…
He tells scout in chapter 9 that “Scout, you aren’t old enough to understand some things yet, but there’s been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn’t do much about defending this man. It’s a peculiar case—it won’t come to trial until summer session. [Judge] John Taylor was kind enough to give us a postponement…. [I]f I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again....Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess...." What he is saying is that if doesn’t defend him he couldn’t tell Jem what to do anymore because he is trying to be a good role module to them, but if he is a coward and backs down from challenges then that means its ok for Scout and Jem to do it as well. Atticus tries to be a good role model for his kids which is why he is a good father A further demonstration of Atticus as a good father is his affection for them. Everything he does for them is out of love. In chapter 15 the mob shows up at the jail to “deal” with Tom Robinson. Jem, Scout and Dill decided show up to see what’s going on. The children are his whole life, he only shows fear when there at risk which is what happened when they showed up at the jail when the town’s men showed up to kill Tom Robinson.
Atticus’ fairness also shows he is a good father because he believes that everyone deserves a chance to be understood and all have reasons for their actions. For example, after revealing the news to Jem and Scout of Tom’s death, he says, “Depends on how you look at it. What was one Negro, more or less, among two hundred of ‘em? He wasn’t Tom to them, he was an escaping prisoner” (Lee 235). This passage shows Atticus's fairness because he always tries to put himself in other people’s shoes in order to give everyone a chance at being understood, as he teaches Jem and Scout to do. He gave up his respectable reputation among many of the whites in Maycomb to defend Tom Robinson, and still speaks highly of the men who killed him. When he says this, he is trying to make the children see that the men who killed Tom did not know him as a person, but as a Negro who committed a crime, so cannot be discriminated upon for doing their job. Along with Atticus’ sense of fairness, his Teaching also characterizes him as a good father to Jem and Scout.
One thing that stood out was that Atticus was always encouraging Scout and Jem to become the best person they could be. Scout stated, “ I could not remember when the lines above Atticus’s moving finger separated into moving words, but I had stared at them all the evenings in my memory.” (18) This supports Atticus in the fact that he always was making sure to make time to not only teach his kids to read, but also it encouraged father and son/daughter time with his children which created an incredible bond between the family. Atticus also supported his children through their actions. Specifically, with Scout he always encouraged her to be the lady that she is and not to conform to society. Some examples would be dressing how she wants to dress and not becoming racist no matter what people say to her. With Jem, Atticus is proven to be an outstanding father because on page (272) it stated, “You heard what Scout said, there’s no doubt about it.” Shown in this quote, Atticus as a father is supportive and trusts his sons word over anyone else’s and this proves the bond and relationship between the two is stronger than anyone’s
Atticus is a good father because he keeps his children on the correct behavior. Atticus said,”You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. Try fighting with your head for a change…it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning” (87). This shows that Atticus is trying to teach Scout to walk away from fights, be the bigger person, and let things go. If Scout keeps fighting, she will get into more trouble with the school and will disappoint Atticus. The text also states,”Jem seemed fascinated by a rose in the carpet. ‘Atticus,’ he said,’she wants me to read to her.’ ‘Read to her?’ ‘Yes sir. She wants me to
Research shows that children are more susceptible to commit crimes, fail in maintaining long lasting relationships and develop depression as well as other psychological disorders from the effects of bad parenting. In fact, many people grow up treating others the same way their parents have treated them with reference to their parents’ values, behaviours and attitudes. Harper Lee, an American author, expressed her childhood experiences in Alabama through writing the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In this novel Harper Lee highlights the prevailing racist attitudes that existed in Alabama in the 1930s. Lee does this by having the parenting style of Atticus, and its impact on his children, stand in contrast to these prevailing racist attitudes. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee conveys that Atticus Finch is a great parent because he is not a hypocrite, he has a sense of fairness and he has good morals and values.
He is a lawyer, which means you have to be trustworthy, but even if he wasn’t a lawyer he would still have this characteristic. Atticus is loyal to everyone. He would never lie during court so things go his way. In chapter nine he says “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” He is telling scout that you should never give up, even though he knew he was going to lose the Tom Robinson case before he started.
Ever heard of the one and only Atticus Finch? The way he raises and teaches his children makes him the best parent in town! Atticus is a character in To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel that took place in Maycomb, Alabama during racism and economic problems. In the story, Atticus is a lawyer that was defending an African-American man who was accused of raping a white woman. He had two children which took care of by himself, with the help of a female maid in their household. Atticus had to raise the two children without a wife, and also went to work daily to deal with important business. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is a good parent because he is courageous and a very good role model for his children.
When Scout,Jem, and Dill were trying to get the note to Boo Radley, Atticus catches them and tells Jem “I'm going to tell you something and tell you one time: Stop tormenting that man. That goes for the two of you”(Lee 65) simply because he is older but like hr said it gose for the two of them. As for that Atticus just wants to keep his children safe in general. Atticus is a very mature adult as you can tell in the novel so he is trying to have his chaldren grow to be like him.
In some aspects, Atticus is a poor example of being a good parent but in others, he is a good parent, since he does not care a lot for his kids but he still is being a good role model, which is described when his kids got into trouble, others spent more time with them than he did, but he still loves his kids and teaches them the truth. One example of why Atticus is a bad parent is because when Scout got in trouble from fighting with Francis, she “ran to Atticus for comfort, but he said she had it coming and it was high time that we went home” (Lee pg 112). After Aunt Alexandra and Uncle Jack got mad at Scout for calling Francis not so nice names, Scout ran to her dad. Instead of comforting her and asking what her side of the story was, he
Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird possesses many admirable characters, but one shines above the rest. Atticus Finch is portrayed in the story as nearly the perfect father. Atticus not only pours his heart and soul into his career as an honest lawyer, but he also displays commendable traits as a father. Throughout the story he treats his children with respect; almost as if they were mature adults. He never simplifies his speech just because he is speaking to children.
Atticus is nothing short of a good father. He doesn’t treat his children like most parents would at their age. Atticus treats Jem and Scout (his children) like young adults. He doesn’t necessarily tell them what’s right and what’s wrong, he gives them the opportunity to decide that for themselves. Atticus also doesn’t force his
He demonstrates this throughout the entire book. At the beginning of the story Scout tells about Atticus’ loving behavior. “...he played with us, read to us, and treated us with courteous detachment,” (Lee 6). This is just one of the many examples how Atticus is a warm hearted person. Atticus shows this trait when he hears people talk about others of a different race. He believes that everyone should be treated equal no matter what they look like or how they may react. He puts a numerous amount of time and attention towards his children. This portrays that Atticus has a big heart for not only his family but for everyone around
Atticus is a great father to Jem and Scout. He took the case not only because he had to, but he wanted justice to be served. Very few whites during this time period actually wanted to do what was right. They all thought that blacks should not be considered as equal and did not want to change their opinions despite the facts. He didn’t want his children thinking that he only took the case because he had to. Atticus wanted them to know that he cared a lot about protecting human rights. Atticus takes these moments in life and makes them great teaching opportunities which makes him a very smart parent.
He shows us this when he reprimands Scout for fighting with kids in the schoolyard. He makes sure she does not do it again and tells her it's not right to fight no matter what they were saying to aggravate her, its still wrong to fight and it does not justify her actions. He also teaches Scout about honesty and to always tell the truth because it will come out eventually. It is like in the trial when Mayella and Bob Ewell are lying about what happened with Tom Robinson. The truth needs to be told and it does get told, in front of the whole town. Even with both of these things he tells Scout he still manages to show her examples of him doing the right thing and being honest. “... if I didn’t, I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” Atticus, page 75 chapter 9. This shows that Atticus shows the example of doing something himself that he does just because it is what is right. Thus I think that Atticus is teaching them the things that a father should. He teaches them justice and law and what the should or should not do (with the help of Aunt Alexandra and
Through the life he lived, Atticus was a positive example and taught his children how to think critically, and how to be a caring person in a life full of darkness. Atticus was a devoted, compassionate and honorable father to his motherless children teaching them about right and wrong in this world. He taught his children how to function as respectable adults. His children, Scout and Jem, did not call him “dad” but instead use his real name “Atticus”. “He [Atticus] spoke to his children in an adult like manner, extending them the privilege to think and reply like grown-ups.
Atticus’s relationship with jem and scout is different to other parents of Maycomb, mainly because he is single parent, hardworking and he is a hands-off parent. He does care about them and does pay attention to their morality. Jem and Scout found their father satisfactory: he played with them, read to them and treated them with courteous detachment. Atticus was never too tired to play keep-away, but when Jem wanted to tackle him Atticus would say, "I'm too old for that, son." Which gives he children the impression that Atticus does not do anything exciting. The children’s view on Atticus changes when he shoots the rabid dog. They see that there is more to their father then they seem to know. One thing about Atticus that is different to
