Dubbing himself Occult Master of Great Purity, Master Zhang Dao-Ling was one of the many contributors to a widespread Chinese religion known as Taoism; it has been argued as not being a religion but, more of a “way” – hence the Chinese translation of “Tao,” which means way or “path.” It is guidance towards further understanding the phenomenon of existence and purpose as well as achieving happiness. In spreading the faith, Dao-Ling also introduced a movement that was infamously known as the “Five Pecks of Rice sect:” a movement that greatly debilitated the empire’s government but, did become an imitation in certain aspects for rebellions that manifested in later years. However, Dao-Ling was a dominant benefactor to the spread of Taoism; he was much further in the religions history than its origination: Laozi. Laozi is a philosopher and “deity” usually referenced as the founder of Taoism. His name translates to “Old Master.” In the year 142, Dao-Ling suggested that he was confronted by Laozi which lead to his creation of his movement. Alive during the Zhou dynasty, this indicates that he had lived between 1046 and 256 BC. However, it has been argued that Laozi was not actually a living being but, rather a legendary entity of the religion. His Taoist text widely known as “Tao Te Ching” by tradition was entirely written by him. It is more of a powerful superior energy than an actual being or something of the divine. It is the explanation for all but does not boast. Tao is all knowing but, does not take it in advantage. Many look to Laozi as the deity of their worshipping while others look towards the “Three Pure Ones .” During the second century, the “first organized religious Daoist establishment” (Stan, Laozi) was constructed. It was called the “Way of the Celestial Master.” This establishment deemed Laozi as the “personification of the Tao” (Stan, Laozi). It is said that he greatly influenced people in all works including literature and the arts. It was important to the religion for people to devote their time to practicing the Tao Te Ching. There is also a field of learning within the school of Taoism that focuses on the understanding of Laozi. A school called Tianshi was formed from the Five Pecks of Rice movement spoken of earlier. In the ear 618, Taoism was legitimized in the Tang Dynasty through a movement known as the “Supreme Clarity” movement.
