Why I Want To Pursue Social Work

I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.

What is diversity and what does it entail? Luther College defines diversity as “complex differences and similarities in perspectives, identities, and points of view among members of an institution as well as among individuals who make up the wider community.” Diversity has been a hot topic in today’s news and social networking arenas with the ever-changing race relations that are prevalent in our country and around the world. The changes in perception towards minorities and women hasn’t just affected these groups socially, but has brought forth different questions about the benefits that a truly diverse would place would have on companies. Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization. Diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, education, back ground, cognitive style and much more. As the work places are becoming more multicultural and diverse, there is an increased need in understanding the dimensions of diversity and cultural differences that affects the business communication within organizations. A better understanding of these differences is not only important to effectively bridge such gaps but also helpful in identifying the unique strengths and perspectives, each diverse group brings, that an organization can benefit from.

Diversity has impacts everywhere and has impacted and changed Certified Public Accountants (CPA’s)? CPA’s are accountant that are certified through a national organization. They maintain that all financial statements to be completely accurate. When you take history into account it was always just the white men that could do anything that required higher education. This was also true for CPA’s at one time, of course this is not the case in the 21st century. Every company has a diversity statement, even Western Michigan University has one. These Diversity statements stat that the company does not take offense to or illegally discriminate agent’s people that fall into different categories. Diversity is present in all aspects of life, its been major topics for cultures forever and helps with all social or cultural probems of diputes. When you have such a huge populations of peopel there are bound to be a lot of differneces and ways of looking at things so ther has to be understanding involved otherwise nothing gets resolved. the key is to be accepting to everytone and never judge anyone regardless of differences. I have had the opportunity to experience working with different teams. I currently work with a group of lab analyst at EMSL Analytical. In the past, I have worked with other members on executive boards for different organizations . I like working in teams, and I believe that in order to become a productive team member you have to be able to communicate effectively. As well as, having the ability to understand multiple viewpoints of those on your team. When working with others, I believe that I can bring certain aspects to the table. I tend to be more outgoing. Growing up as a child, I was always fearful of what other thought and considered of me. This fear brought forth self-esteem difficulties throughout my school as well as I entered college. Unfortunately, my fears restricted me from forming friendships, and even to the point of preventing me from developing as an employee. This fear that crippled me from within was the main source of what caused me to holdback in life rather than exposing to the world the true individual I actually was.

When the word diversity is mentioned, what comes to mind is the ‘obvious’ differences between people, such as race, culture, gender. The true and broader viewpoint would be - "diversity" is used broadly to refer to many demographic variables, including, but not limited to, race, religion, color, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, age, education, geographic origin, and skill characteristics. America's diversity has given this country its unique strength, resilience and richness. This is stated on a page of the U.S Department of the Interior. America has acknowledged that its diversity has much contributed to its relentless success.

Diversity has been one of the top issues in today’s organization or establishment. At the workplace diversity means creating an environment that all employees feel included. It doesn’t matter of their gender, age, race, work experience, or sexual orientation. The Workplace should acknowledge and recognize other races and other cultures and recognize the fact there are many ways of viewing the world. Workplace diversity is what others bring into the actual workplace if you notice it brings different opinions and interaction from different backgrounds into the workplace. It opens up others points of perceptions on how things are viewed.

1. In addition to your personal desire to help people, why have you chosen social work as a profession over another profession or major? I have always have had a strong passion for helping people, especially children. I grew up poorer than poor, never dreaming I could do much of anything about the social issues I saw in the world. My top priority was just surviving which, honestly, didn’t allow much energy for planning a successful future. Growing up in and out of the foster care system, I developed a negative perspective on social workers. However, with the support of my husband, and the knowledge I gained while earning my Associate’s degree, I have discovered how my life experiences are exactly why I should become a social worker. With the encouragement and support of my husband, I began my studies at Portland Community College. where I fell in love with Criminal Justice; I completed my Associate’s degree in this field. My goal at the time was to work in probation and parole, but with each assignment that goal began to shift. One notable assignment was to build a new prison system to help lower recidivism rates. The object of this paper was to consider the one-stop shop between prison and a halfway house; a baby-steps approach for helping people re-enter society. My proposal, however, wasn 't to get “tougher” on crime, but rather to fix the source of what was broken. When the instructor read my proposal, he prompted me to consider social work. It is a known fact that in order for companies to flourish, excellent leadership practices and employees go hand-in-hand. What most companies have failed to acknowledge is how diversity within the workplace, especially in management and executive leadership, does not have a very strong presence. Numerous executives have embraced the fact that their hiring practices are inconsistent with their new motto (we do not discriminate…), but fail to realize that it is more of an internal issue than it is external. The government has tried to regulate some of the practices of hiring and firing applicants. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (est. 1965) states that is it is an enforcing federal law that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex [including pregnancy], national origin, age [40 or older],disability or genetic information (Canas and Sondak, pg. 187). Though these laws to the have been implemented for the development of a company and provides an equal opportunity for many applicants, they fail to provide the structure to educate senior executives in these specific challenges being faced today. Multicultural Issues: There are many multicultural difference between and Diana and myself such as ethnicity, culture, gender, and even age that will have an effect on the quality of relationship between her (client) and myself (social worker). First, culture and ethnicity are important factors that influence people. It is very important that I develop cultural competence to communicate effetely and appropriate with people from other cultures because there are many things that might be completely acceptable in one culture, but it might offensive in another one. For example, I am Hispanic and it is very normal in my culture to hug and kiss another person on the chick, but in some culture that might be crossing the boundaries. It is essential to learn and get familiar with as many different cultures and ethnic groups as possible to provide culture competence services.
