Homework is often seen as a useful study tool, however it can cause more problems than solve them. Homework adds to the already harrowing task of keeping up with grades, you have to worry about completing classwork as well as studying for upcoming tests or projects for six classes, even seven, if you have a 0 period. Homework adds stress, prevents students from pursuing their interests, can cause them not to give their full attention to everything they should, makes keeping up with a social life and having the interactions humans need impossible, all of which can add up to depression (which is something many teens are already prone to). We go to school seven hours a day, sit in classrooms, listening and doing work and often times worrying about everything we have to do after. Seven hours is a lot to do everything, but especially paper work and research, so having to go home and have two to four more hours of that to look forward to… Is not particularly comforting. All this extra work is usually chalked up to be something that will help a student learn the topic, but if teachers are doing their jobs to get the important points across and time is being used well in class, than it should not be necessary. In an absence of homework students can instead spend the time usually wasted on often rushed, under quality work, studying the way that best suits them, or participating in an activity that will ease their stress from the long tiring days of school. I’m just like
By not giving out homework, students will work harder in class and have better grades. Teachers have to understand that if students are tired from late nights, they wouldn't be able to work efficiently during the day. In addition, students would be much more excited to come to school because they know they wouldn't have to worry about getting any homework. In 2010, a survey was taken and it showed that about 70% of teen ages 11 to 17 get less than 8 hours of sleep per day due to the amount of homework they have to do (Logos). According to Alfie Kohen, students feel forced to do their homework, therefore they aren't learning as much as they should (Ethos). Students lose interest in the topic and do not benefit from what they’re learning. In China, a cry for change by a mother who lost her thirteen year old daughter who committed suicide due to her inability to achieve in math, the mother considers homework is a huge negative factor toward her deceased daughter's tragic ending along with the pressure of society (Pathos). Such a story should leave us wondering, how many more children need to suffer the silent epidemic of school stress. Statistics prove the leading cause for the majority of physical and emotional complaints leading up to diagnosis of depression in middle and high school due to the amount of
Is homework more trouble than it is worth? Many students would say it is. Often times, students will work on homework for several hours a day and produce no results. Whether it is in tests, quizzes, or real life situations, improvement does not always show in the results. In fact, homework can cause many different problems. Teachers should stop assigning homework so students will not feel as stressed about school, will have more time to do activities, will have less strain in their relationships, and will not have the negative effects that homework brings.
Not only does homework help student but also it creates interaction between teens and parents. However, statics has shown that even though homework is a way to refresh what students have learned, it also create stress for students. Homework has shown its benefits for student but most of the time when student is given a homework it’s likely he/she will not do it. They believe it’s stressful, and when they can’t get the right answer, they gave up instantly instead of keep practicing. According to researchers, they believe that when student do more homework they get better grades and do well on the test/quizzes that were given. Even though homework has many advantage toward students, it also has disadvantage. Which include having too much homework and these things could lead to mental health issue toward students.
Everyday, when the school day is over, students are most likely to get homework to do when they get home. This can be a lot or a little amount of homework, but it can still effect the students the way they are. These effects can be good, bad, or nothing, so today, we take a look whether homework should be assigned or not.
After a long day of school, students are tired, stressed, and overworked. This is often something that is ignored when it comes to students of all ages. Homework provides a heavy load that can add additional stress and time on a student’s shoulders. Schools should be making sure that students are receiving enough work throughout the day, to make sure kids do not have the worry of homework when school is over. Students who receive lots of homework, may not have enough time in the evenings to be around family, friends and enjoy the rest of their day.
Homework has been around a long time. In fact, the first school made in the world was believed to be built sometime between 140 BC and 143 BC. While studies have proven that homework can have benefits, too much of it can be bad for students. Homework can take away their time for family/activities and can cause negative health effects. The amount of homework assigned to students should be decreased.
The first reason that homework is not helpful is that it limits students’ free time. Students look forward to school ending and being able to relax and enjoy themselves. As the seven hours counts down, they have the afternoon and evening to wait for. However, if they have homework that night, all of their plans are ruined. For all of the work that students do each day, they deserve time to relax. No matter what work students get, it’s really bad. It forces them to work longer, and possibly through the night, which leads me to my next point.
People expect so much out of teenagers, especially the students who are involved in sports and maintain a job throughout the school year. They are expected to attend classes and their extracurricular activities; they have to make it to work on time, finish their homework, do their studies, and on top of that, get enough sleep at night. This is the kind of busy schedule students uphold in their week and it’s overwhelming for them. It causes stress and exhaustion, and people still expect them to do well and keep up with everything. Is this how we want students to feel all the time? Sure we want them to accomplish goals and be the best they can be, but one way to relieve some stress is less homework. When they come home from work or sports
When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
Homework not only takes up time but it pressures and stresses kids out. “Fifty-six per cent of the students in the study cited homework as a primary stressor in their lives, despite the fact that most U.S. students' homework load has remained relatively stable since 1984, according to the Brookings Institute's 2014 Brown Center Report on American Education”(Daily Mail Reporter). “Fifty-six per cent of the students in the study cited homework as a primary stressor in their
First of all, students should not get homework is it is one cause of stress. If students don't get their homework done they can get stressed. In some cases stress can cause depression or worse things. It’s just not good.
Why should kids have homework? Some people believe homework is necessary it helps you practice and get ready for the next class, others believe homework isn’t necessary and it only causes stress and is boring. It can cause an immense amount of stress, and a lot falls into this. Kids feel pressured, they stay up late, they're in a lousy mood. Weight loss. Weight gain. Stress can cause plenty of unwelcome, rough situations, especially in teens and preteens. According to healthline.com, most students say that homework causes stress. " (Healthline.com) Also, unfortunately, this stress can easily lead to thoughts of suicide and drug and alcohol abuse. Wouldn't schools care about kids' mental health? According to outofstress.com, homework can cause kids' stress level to increase and homework is definitely a major cause. In almost all schools, teachers assign homework assignments to students starting in elementary school. When students begin to grow older and are faced with more challenging classes in junior high and high school, the workload begins to pile up. Students are now becoming more stressed and have anxiety because of the amount of work that is placed on them which is even taking a toll on their family life. Many students end up completing the assignment in order to just get credit for it without a regard for learning. But over the years, homework has begun to lose its purpose. Instead of the students focusing on only completing their homework in order to get good grades, they should be more focused on learning the material that they are studying. Without truly understanding the material in the classes that students might be taking, school is essentially a waste of time. The effects of mass quantities of schoolwork on students that are given by teachers leads students to underperform in school due to the mental stress and anxiety.
The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks.
