Homework has been around a long time. In fact, the first school made in the world was believed to be built sometime between 140 BC and 143 BC. While studies have proven that homework can have benefits, too much of it can be bad for students. Homework can take away their time for family/activities and can cause negative health effects. The amount of homework assigned to students should be decreased. One of the reasons student’s shouldn’t be receiving large amounts of homework is because it can cause many negative health effects. According to recent studies, doing excessive amounts of homework can cause headaches, sleep deprivation, and weight loss. This means that students that are assigned lots of homework can be prone to many negative …show more content…
On the contrary, excessive amounts of homework can be counterproductive and can actually bring students grades down. Large amounts of homework can work against students AND their grades. An experiment (by the Australian Institute of Family Studies) watched 10,000 students around the world, and concluded that those with massive loads of homework were actually achieving lower scores. If students are assigned a lot of homework, they will simply get tired/bored of doing it and will not learn anything from it. Also, if the teacher does not go over any of the assignments handed out, and a student doesn’t get it, then it could influence his/her grades on the next tests. For example, when students learn a topic in math, that topic usually incorporates itself into the next topic. If the student has a hard time with a simple topic, and then moves into the next unit that builds upon the simple topic, he/she will fall behind. To summarize, doing some homework is good for students. The problem occurs when they are assigned large amounts of homework. I believe that doing a little homework each night is beneficial, but when the time spent doing homework increases it can have an overall negative impact on the student. Another reason students should not be receiving excessive amounts of homework is because it can influence students mentally and emotionally. It has been proven that when students
Not only does homework help student but also it creates interaction between teens and parents. However, statics has shown that even though homework is a way to refresh what students have learned, it also create stress for students. Homework has shown its benefits for student but most of the time when student is given a homework it’s likely he/she will not do it. They believe it’s stressful, and when they can’t get the right answer, they gave up instantly instead of keep practicing. According to researchers, they believe that when student do more homework they get better grades and do well on the test/quizzes that were given. Even though homework has many advantage toward students, it also has disadvantage. Which include having too much homework and these things could lead to mental health issue toward students.
In the article “ When Homework Takes Over,” by Merri Rosenberg, she quotes ‘ A new study finds that heavy homework takes negative impacts on the lives of high school students, resulting excess stress, physical problems, and little time for leisure. This shows that excessive homework can lead to high stress levels and physical problems for teens and children. Rosenberg also states ‘Teachers handing out more assignments than ever is making kids stressed, their sleep
Heavy loads of homework can be shown more as harmful than good, not only for students but also for their families. As shown in Source B it says, “It is the primary arena in which children, parents and schools interact on a daily basis” (Gill and Schossman). Which I can totally disagree with from my experience, stating that every time I come from school to home, I always have to go straight to my room, turn my computer on, and either work on essays or have to search up problems for my algebra assignments, or just information for any class in general, which takes up a whole day of my life. Another reason is it is very time consuming! These homeworks are always getting in my way of either having activities after school or just time to spend with my family, which I hardly ever have a chance to do because of all the work I have, and might I also state that my mom is always worrying about my health since I usually don’t have time to eat too, also she is always asking me if I have time to read the bible with my siblings and father, which I automatically have to state I can’t because again of all this work. Another statement I have is how homework is mainly useless to our education, grabbing information from Source F, “Kids who wouldn’t dream of cheating on a test or copying a research paper think nothing of copying homework” (Chaika). Since doing homework is just such a waste for us we usually just copy it either from other people or from the internet, and since math class usually just gives a packet about what is going to be on the quiz, we end up using that to study which ends up being more helpful for the upcoming test rather than doing
Homework. Just by the sound of that word, the aggravating feeling arises. Students of all ages ask the question, “Why do we have homework?” Whether we like it or not, homework will be assigned to students no matter what. The real question happens to be, is homework helpful or harmful? Many people state that homework takes up too much time and has effects on health, while others argue that homework benefits the student because it allows them to have extra time to study and practice their skills. Furthermore, research indicates that homework is harmful due to the fact that it causes stress and takes time from a persons’ daily life.
Homework, homework, everyone hates homework. People are up all night doing something that they think is such a waste of time! Well is it a waste of time? Most people think so! Infact most people think it has no effect at all! homework has had a huge impact on sleeping, time and grades. Grades k-12 have seen a dramatic change in homework. Changes that happened recently. The evidence shows that homework may not be harmful, but it sure is not helping.
A study by the American Journal of Family Therapy speaks to this issue. In the study, it was found that children in first to sixth grade are assigned three times as much homework as recommended by the National Education Association. According to another study, an overabundance of homework has been found to not only be unnecessary, but also correlate with negative non-academic effects in students attending high school. These effects can range anywhere from psychiatric issues such as depression to physical health issues such as ulcers, migraines, sleep deprivation and weight loss (Galloway et al.).
First there is way too much homework. Here are some reasons why having a lot of homework is not a good thing. Students that have a lot of homework can’t spend a lot of time with family. (Washington) Also students can’t spend a lot of time outside. (Washington) Some students also get an average of 6.1 hours a week of homework (Washington) There is a so called ten minute rule (Wallace). Kids
But actually, more homework doesn’t do the trick. Too much homework can get into resting time or activities students need after school. Kids need their own time to be able to lay back and relax. On,”Healthline”, it states,”Research shows that some students regularly higher amounts of homework than experts recommend, which may cause stress and negative health effects.” More homework will intervene with students downtime and brain breaks needed after school. It can also negatively affect the child’s stress and possibly create negative health issues. Homework can be good, but too much can get in the way of a student’s relaxing time needed after
Homework is something that most kids scorn having to do. After an exhausting seven to eight hour day, it does not make much sense to give homework to a kid who is already debilitated from tedious school work. Homework can give added stress to a kid who might not have a stable home life. Kids should not get homework because most kids have other activities outside of school. As a result, it is probable that school work will interfere with sports or extracurricular activities. A recent study from health line showed that homework can overburden kids resulting in an unhealthy skyrocket in stress levels. Health line also revealed that seventy percent of the kids are always stressed about homework and fifty six percent say it is the top stress maker.
“Too much homework can cause stress in a student and lead to health issues in the body and mind” (TeenInk Magazine). About 97% of high school students would agree on the previous quote that teachers give out too much homework and they are stressed out. There should be less homework because it takes away from time with family and causes stress and most students are time limited.
Large amounts of homework cause excess stress that has a negative effect on students. A survey was taken from a group of high school students to see how the students are affected by homework. Almost three-quarters of the students surveyed claim to almost always being stressed from homework, and experience physical
To begin with, one reason why homework doesnt help students, parents, or teachers is because it is bad for health. One reason why it is bad for health is because it causes anxiety/stress. Too much homework can damage students health by making anxiety and stress, according to thecaseforandagainsthomework.com. Another reason why anxiety and stress is bad for you is because you have so much stress you go really fast on your homework and you do really bad. I have had that happen to me and it is not good. If that always happens then that could really affect your grade. Then, the last reason why anxiety and stress is bad is because, anxiety and stress is a mental thing and if you keep on having it it could damage your brain, according to the website sciencedaily.com . Having your anxiety and stress damage your brain over homework is just crazy. Another reason why homework is bad for health is because you can have anger. Having anger when you are doing homework is not good. For instance, one thing about having anger during homework is that some people can get really mad because they don´t know how to do their
Thirdly, homework causes a student to be more pessimistic about school and grades. Students shouldn’t have homework because their grades drop, it causes stress, and their attitude to school becomes negative. First of all, students shouldn’t have homework since students can achieve superior grades. Quoting livescience.com, “ According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, data shows that in countries where more time is spent on homework, students score lower on a standardized test called the Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA. The same correlation is also seen when comparing homework time and test performance at schools within countries.
As teachers give out so much homework there is limited time to finish work for another class or study for another class. Whenever we actually do the unnecessary work and turn it in, it doesn't always necessarily get graded and it just causes more stress on top of stress. Students are already not getting enough sleep with all six classes that they have. Yet homework is great for students is very helpful for students in their classes, but at the same time they have so much work that they have done in such little time. CNN conducted a study last year showed that the impact of excessive homework on high schoolers included high stress levels, a lack of
Researchers asked students if they experienced a stress related symptom and more than 80 percent of students have reported one stress related symptom (Is Too Much Homework Bad for Kids’ Health). Students can get homework from each teacher they have and as they get homework from each teacher it can add up and stress students out. The stress they get can lead to physical symptoms like headaches and sleep deprivation. As students start to get stress from the homework they get it can lead them to not wanting to do their homework because of the stress they get from it. Altogether great amounts of homework can cause students to stress out. Although this may be true some others may think that teachers should not be limited to the amount of homework that teachers can give out each
