The IUPAC name indicates the parent chain. The substituents attached to it are drawn according to their numbers in the name given.

The general formula of alkanes is CnH2n+2. Thus, knowing the number of carbon atoms, the number of hydrogen atoms in the alkane can be determined, and the molecular formula can be written.
