Chapter 11, Problem 54SE

Coal-fired power plants used in the electrical industry have gained increased public attention because of the environmental problems associated with solid wastes generated by large-scale combustion (“Fly Ash Binders in Stabilization of FGD Wastes,” J. of Environmental Engineering, 1998: 43–49). A study was conducted to analyze the influence of three factors—binder type (A), amount of water (B), and land disposal scenario (C)— that affect certain leaching characteristics of solid wastes from combustion. Each factor was studied at two levels. An unreplicated 23 experiment was run, and a response value EC50 (the effective concentration, in mg/L, that decreases 50% of the light in a luminescence bioassay) was measured for each combination of factor levels. The experimental data is given in the following table:

    Factor   Response
Run A B C EC50
1 –1 –1 –1 23,100
2 1 –1 –1 43,000
3 –1 1 –1 71,400
4 1 1 –1 76,000
5 –1 –1 1 37,000
6 1 –1 1 33,200
7 –1 1 1 17,000
8 1 1 1 16,500

Carry out an appropriate ANOVA, and state your conclusions.

1.“Effects of Short-Term Supplementation with Selenised Yeast on Milk Production and Composition of Lactating Cows”(Australian Journal of Dairy Technology, [2004]: 199-203) supplied the following data on milk selenium concentration (mg/L) for a sample of cows given seleniumsupplement (the treatment group) and a sample of cows given no supplement (the control group). The measurements of selenium were taken initally and again after a 9-day period. The study was conducted becausea deficiency of the trace element selenium in the diet can negatively impact growth, immunity, muscle and neuromuscular function, and fertility. The production of selenium supplements to dairy cows is justified when pastures have low selenium levels.   data  is attached            a.Use the given data for the treatment group to determine if there is sufficient evidenceto conclude that the mean selenium concentration is greater after 9 days of the selenium supplement.   b.Are the data for the cows in…
The article "Effect of Granular Subbase Thickness on Airfield Pavement Structural Response" (K. Gopalakrishnan and M. Thompson, Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, 2008:331-342) presents a study of the effect of the subbase thickness (in mm) on the amount of surface deflection caused by aircraft landing on an airport runway. Two landing gears, one simulating a Boeing 747 aircraft, and the other a Boeing 777 aircraft, were trafficked across four test sections of runway. The results are presented in the following table. Section 3 4 Boeing 747 Boeing 777 4.01 3.87 3.72 3.76 4.57 4.48 4.36 4.43 Can you conclude that the mean deflection is greater for the Boeing 777?
The vulnerability of inshore environments to contamination due to urban and industrial expansion in Mombasa is discussed in the paper “Metals, Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Organo- chlorines in Inshore Sediments and Waters on Mombasa, Kenya” [Marine Pollution Bulletin (1997) 34:570–577]. A geochemical and oceanographic survey of the inshore waters of Mombasa, Kenya, was undertaken during the period from September 1995 to January 1996. In the survey, suspended particulate matter and sediment were collected from 48 stations within Mombasa’s estuarine creeks. The concentrations of major oxides and 13 trace elements were determined for a varying number of cores at each of the stations. In particular, the lead concentrations in sus-pended particulate matter (mg kg21 dry weight) were determined at 37 stations. The researchers were interested in determining whether the average lead concentration was greater than 30 mg kg21 dry weight. The data are given in the following table along with summary…
