The Negatives of Online Education Online education is a type of distance learning. The student is taking courses without attending a school or university. Instead, online students and teachers interact over the Internet. Online classes can teach students educational responsibility. By forcing them to access the online portal to participate in reading the textbooks/lectures and doing the assignments. Technical abilities is also learned with online classes. Students who lack the tech savvy knowledge can learn how to navigate through the online environment. Being able to access the online portal at any given time of the day is one other benefit to online education. Though online education may seem beneficial, there are more negatives than …show more content…
There is a lot of poor communication in online classes. There will be students who will never email the instructors for more details about an assignments, or, there will be older students who don’t know how to email the instructors for more details. If the student doesn’t understand an assignment, and never emails to ask for more details, can result in a poor grade for the lack of knowledge in knowing what they’re doing. There’s one final drawback to not having social interactions with instructors; Students can potentially miss out on building relationships that can result in helpful guidance and recommendation letters down the road when needed. Students who are prone to procrastination will have a difficult time adjusting to online classes. Hours of work are necessary to get through all of the materials, including course lectures, educational videos, assignments, projects, assigned textbook reading and discussions. For students who are getting an online degree, especially an online master’s degree, require a greater amount of work. The positive of online classes is being able to access the class in any free time. Most online classes though, require work to be turned in on certain days and times. Which makes it harder for students to remember when assignments need to be done. The pleasure of the instructor reading/lecturing the textbook material out loud won’t be there. It
When thinking about what makes an online course good I am able to call upon many personal experiences. I have stated before that a good online course incorporates media from multiple sources; which I believe is an essential factor. Being able to have access to images, audio files, and videos assist with the learning process and it can assist those who are more visual or audio learners draw connections to the required written text. I also believe that it is important for instructor and student connections in online course. In a good
Online classes are best for people who feel they can produce better work in an isolated environment with no instructor or classmates directly in front of them. This also benefits more for people with full time jobs or other commitments that would prevent them from going to the classroom. Now the downside to this is that you have more temptation to be distracted from doing your work. Since you do practically all your assignments online, it's real easy to go right onto social media sites such as Facebook and see what everyone else is doing. If you plan on doing an online based program, you have to have a lot of self-control and will power to keep from going onto other sites not related to your
Opinions and Questions: Online courses do not give the same interaction that traditional classses do. You will not be able to ask questions easily and you won't hear the opinions of others in the class. While these aren't exactly deal-breakers, they can make you miss out on important topics that aren't talked about otherwise.
Instructors often have multiple classes they teach, consequently they stay busy. An advantage of online classes is if you need help you just send an email and your instructor can reply. Not only can you reference later on but its possible you will have greater explanation than if you had been in a brick and mortar class. When in a brick and mortar class they have to try and equally help all students in a limited time frame. If a student is having a hard time comprehending the instructor would eventually have to move on to the next student and advise the previous student to seek help after class. A reason for this could be that they have a different learning style from what is being taught. There are three learning styles these include: visual, auditory, and kineshetic. One could easily upload a lecture, power point, and offer additional worksheets for extra practice online for the students to utilize. Traditional classroom's it don't allow time to cover all three methods a teacher either would have to pick one or give a little of all three. This could have some students fall behind while others excel. Receiving feedback helps improve a students studies. It can help you see your weakness and strong points. Online forums and lectures offer instructors a break from teaching and allow them to better critique work and offer more detailed feedback. In a regular class they have to
Online classes and the traditional classroom setting both offer many of the same advantages. They both provide the student with the same course content so there is no loss of curriculum between the two. Both demand the same time investment for learning, studying, taking exams, completing papers, and so on. Although it seems easy to think that with doing all of your school work online there isn’t any personal interaction with professors and peers, however, that is a common misconception. Online classes, like traditional ones, require a degree of contact with your peers and professors. It may not be as personal interaction as raising your hand and being called on, but you can e-mail your professor at any time and there are discussion boards and forums available for fellow students to communicate and help each other out.
Unlike traditional classes, online classes allow for more flexibility. For instance, the student talked about in paragraph two that works from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday and has to take care of children, would still be able to go to work and not loose quite as much precious family time if the student chooses online classes. This student could make the decision to study on lunch break or after the children are asleep. The lack of classmates can be just as much a blessing as having them sometimes. Every once in a while classmates can be a distraction and cause another student not to hear something that the instructor said. For this reason online classes are a great option since a student taking online classes can simply study away from other
Students are not put forth the effort they would have in a traditional class. Due to pacing ways, how much effort you put into the course, and how the teachers are respected. Through online classes fail to succeed as well as traditional, they still share similar information, course credits, and teaching new technology to the youth. Our world is growing, striving, and conquering new things. We need to put more effort in managing these online classes so not only can the teachers actually enjoy it, but the students learn in a new, meaningful
For flexibility, we realized that the student would have flexible classes. They would be able to work whenever they needed to wherever they needed to. For example, if an online student had a job, family, or both, they would be able to pursue their degree while also taking care of their family or working. They would be able to complete their classes wherever there was an Internet connection. My last category was student experiences, and numerous reasons fit under this heading. To begin, there are actually more interactions with students when they take an online class because they need to interact with the teacher and other students more. Online classes also teach students discipline and time management skills since the work load is done on their own time. There are numerous reasons for online classes; my class came up with copious reasons and then I categorized the reasons into four key components: money, opportunities, flexibility, and student experiences.
Berler brings up the topic of and out of state freshman who began her college career at a major research university. “The online environment didn’t suit the student”(Berler). According to the student pre-cal was to difficult for her she switched to and introductory class instead. She felt the online class wasn’t helping her understand the concept she needed more lecture step by step teaching. Online classes can teach you step by step but to stay focus is the problem the term tedious is a big one involved. Now by being in a class you may feel more active because there is stuff going on around you and you have the chance on meeting more people
Students are required to learn massive amounts of course material. It is mandatory to learn at the instructor’s pace. Online courses give flexibility while scheduling to learn this material. Students are overwhelmed with homework throughout the duration of each class. Some have up to four classes of homework due weekly. It can be difficult for many to absorb all the material while scheduling work and home life. Trying to arrange the balance of each can be tiring for the body and mind. When taking online classes, there is an advantage to have the capability to learn the subject when the brain and body are ready to handle it. This flexibility can give the benefit of the full focus on schoolwork. On-campus classes give the benefit of help on the spot when needed, but students that take a
Is online school a legitimate form of education? Are online classes more or less effective than traditional classes? These questions are frequently asked by teachers, students, and parents alike. The topic of online learning is frequently debated. Many people argue that online classes are not viable; they’re too impersonal, they give students too much leeway to procrastinate. In reality, online classes are just as viable as traditional classes. In many cases, they can actually be better-suited to the needs of students, due to increased flexibility and accessibility. Furthermore, online classes can teach students essential life skills, and even improve their health and performance.
Moreover online learning can increase and develop your technical skills as even the most basic online course contains computer skills and makes you learn how to use the computer as students in these courses learn how to navigate various learning management systems and make students more opened to participating online in their classes. As they get the experience to create and share documents and sharing audio and video materials into their assignments. (Ten Advantages of Taking Online Classes). In addition online learning offers students more interaction as it offers shy students or more retarded students the ability to participate in their classes as discussions in online classes or chats are surely easier for them to communicate with other which is way better than traditional universities as communications for shy people is way more harder.( Ten Advantages of Taking Online Classes). Another important thing is the ability to concentrate in lectures or classes as in traditional colleges it is easy to get distracted by other
As this world 's technology is progressing so is the way we teach and learn. Ever since school started hundreds of years ago it 's always been a teacher in a live classroom with many students. Everything is shifting, however; and now we have transitioned into online classes as well. I have had both, and I can tell you there are many comparisons and contrasts between the two. 77% of educators believe that online learning is just as good as traditional learning, if not better, nearly 70% of all students claim online instruction to be as good as or better than a traditional classroom setting, and 26% of online students claim to learn better online than in a classroom. So clearly people aren 't too against this new form of learning. Online enrollment rates are expanding at much faster rates than traditional classroom enrollment growth; specifically, in higher education, online enrollments have grown 21%, whereas growth for traditional classroom instruction registers only 2% since 2002. Traditional and Online classes have a lot of similarities and differences especially in areas like flexibility, comprehension of the course material, and discipline.
Taking online class 's is an emerging form of learning of the internet age that did not really exist 20 to 30 years ago. The technology was not there before for the large scale of distanced learning allowing people that 'd previously have very limited options, the ability to learn from across the world that we can easily see from today. Many people can now learn and get many respected degrees from respected Colleges and Universities without as much of a need to be in a set classroom at a set time a few times a week, something that can be very difficult for many busy hard working adults. On the contrast of online class 's, there is the traditional Face to Face classroom setting that nearly every adult has experienced and has many developed and evolved teaching techniques for almost any student 's preferred style of learning whereas online learning may only be good for certain learning styles and not appeal so much to the older generations of students. "At Lockheed Martin, a survey of senior management and employees found that senior managers all of whom in the 40 's or preferred class learning over other forms” (Merriman, 2006). Traditional classrooms can provide students more structure than what can be provided in an online class 's that 'd require more self-discipline, but the question needing to be asked is online learning as good or even better in some respects than the traditional class structure.
Exchanging information with instructors is also very different in online and traditional classes. Online instructors must present information as clearly and concisely as possible. They also have to provide more detailed feedback than traditional college instructors. Instructors in traditional classrooms have the benefit of
