Traditional Vs. Online Education

Everyone has their own learning styles. Going to school online might not be cut out for a person that needs to be face to face with an instructor. Or a person that has to have on hands training might not want to attend an online campus. It’s a tough decision when you have to make this decision on how you want to continue with your education. An education is an education, so it’s better to have one than not to have one at all. So it all really boils down to you making that decision based on how you interpret your learning skills. With the busy lifestyles we have today, juggling parenting, working, and school can be overwhelming so having the structure of a traditional setting may work best. For some, they may prefer this organized method. Social interaction is a factor in traditional learning as well. A student would always have face-to-face interaction with his/her classmates as well as with the instructors. Some students would prefer the more instant feedback and expressions as well as to read body language of those they are interacting with. They would have hands on experiences and learning available to him/her. This learning environment would also provide extracurricular activities such as, sporting events and book fairs. For most, this way has been our only type of experience with education and for some students; a deviation from this method of learning can cause anxiety, fear, and frustration. Obviously someone who does not adapt to change easily should probably stick with the traditional education.

With all the publicity over online courses, great professors alike have been determined to find out whether online courses are just as effective as face-to-face classes. There have been some controversies over the situation; therefore, several studies have been made. One study by Adam Driscoll, Karl Jicha, Andrea Hunt, Lisa Tichavsky, and Greatchen Thompson shows that given the appropriate pedagogy or instruction, online courses is just as an effective teaching format as face-to-face classes (Driscoll, Jicha, Hunt, Tichavsky, & Thompson, 2012). The study showed that when comparing online courses against face-to-face courses, the midterm scores for both teaching platforms are the same. Given that the GPA of the students is taken into consideration, the test grades do not improve or become worse when the class is taken online. Online courses can offer students a chance to become independent and explore their education in new and interesting ways that can allow them to be creative and work at their own pace and ways. This level of independence is proven to be vital in a workplace today. When deciding to take college courses there are many choices you have to make. One of the more important choices is where you plan to take your classes. The reasons for the huge growth of online education is money even though online education targeted working adults that have little or no time to sit in a traditional classroom for millions of men and women serving in the armed forces online education has made earning a degree much more possible.
