Taoism and Confucianism are two primary Chinese ways of thinking. Historically, these two philosophies have been viewed as polar opposites, but upon further research, they have the same mission. The belief system of Taoism viewed in Tao Te Ching, written by Lao Tzu, is the monistic belief that human kind has a connection to the universe, and the “way” controls your life and everything that you do. The “way” has a pre-determined plan for your life, and you must sit back and follow it. On the other hand, Confucianism represented in The Art of War, shows that you have to work and discipline yourself to become complete. The Art of War is essentially a “battle plan”, and “Tao Te Ching “ is a essentially a book of ultimate humility. These two pieces seem quite different with their own different goals. While Confucianism and Taoism have different ways of reaching their respective goals, their goals and their destiny is essentially the same: and that is self-control.

Taoism is a philosophy which also means a way of life. Lao Tzu started this, he lived a little before Confucius, about 600 BC. Tao means the “path” or “way”. Lao Tzu worked as a a record keeper. He believed that happiness was for people to just “go with the flow”, meaning to let things go about on their own rather than forcing the situations. According to Confucius, each person should act with virtue in all social matters; family, community, state, and kingdom, to ensure unity. Lao Tzu thought it was extremely wrong for people to fight in wars. He was also extremely against a government making up rules and regulations on how people should do things in their life. Taoism is against anything with certain regulations, even a food diet.

In the book of Genesis and Exodus, we find many similarities between Abraham and Moses. Their relationship to God can be compared since they share the same faith, obligation to comply to their God are, both chosen by God and grow to be the most devoted servants of god regardless of their doubt and challenges.

Confucianism is a “comprehensive system of thought and behaviour encompassing religion, philosophy, morality, and political science.” Its teachings have shaped the political and social development of China for hundreds of years, and leaves its mark in ancient history. Confucius’s teachings dealt mainly with personal and political morality - he taught what it meant to be a just ruler and a man of principles and honour. His teachings sought to restore the Mandate of Heaven to the rulers in order for peace and prosperity to return to China. His main goal was to help the individuals achieve social and personal perfection, and also reestablish the ordered society that had supposedly existed before this period of internal warfare. Thus,

Confucianism, the philosophical ideas of Kong Qiu (551-479 BCE), or Confucius, has made a great impact on China’s history. His ideas came to pragmatic use since the rise of the Han Dynasty. Since then, political reforms and changes of China’s state has caused them to adopt and abandon it continuously. Confucius’s ideas still exists in other Asian countries too, like South Korea, where Confucianism passively saturates the daily lives and practices of South Koreans. But the country at hand is China. China’s current government is controlled by the CCP, or Communist Party of China. Nonetheless, Since Marxist China, China has gradually turned to democratic and capitalistic principles. But would Confucianism, a more socially ethic for of government and principles be better as opposed to a liberal, Western form of government? Theoretically, with the population of China, almost of ⅕ of the world’s population, a Confucian type government would be a viable one, but maybe not a desirable one, although popular. Still, the ideals would influence China’s people by a larger scale, bringing a revival of Confucianism that will be greater than ever.

Taoism, also or better known as “The Way,” may be grouped as both a Religion and Chinese philosophy. Taoists believe in yielding and accepting to the Ways of life, accompanying nature and being by containing and going for their goals outside of praising a god externally. Taoism, in its philosophical and metaphysical environment, is somewhat like Confucianism, but the ideal interests of both religions are comparing. Confucianism is known to be produced during a time of war and depends deeply upon political and the moral system that dressed up society and the Chinese empire, while Taoism connects to a time of spiritual, peace, and honors of metaphysical preoccupation.

Religions in the world have become more complex than just simple religious practices. Religions are now philosophies that people study and make a living from. Whether like Confucianism which focuses on society and Taoism which focuses on nature, peace and self discovery and love, these two religions or philosophies have been around since 550BCE. Confucianism and Taoism developed in China over many centuries with numerous internal and external influences. Though they share some fundamental similarities, there divergence is vast and their central concern juxtaposed. Early Chinese indigenous religions formed the basis on which these two schools of thought developed.
