Differences And Views Between Confucianism And Taoism

Confucianism and Taoism are both ancient Chinese styles of living, are two of the most popular philosophies and are important in China. Therefore, this paper analyze the same and different between this two, from basic thoughts and influence.
Confucianism
Confucianism is a way of life taught by Confucius in China. Confucianism is perhaps best understood as an all-encompassing humanism. It has been followed by the Chinese for more than two millennia. They teach people the wisdom of life, family and governance.
The basic thoughts of Confucius
Confucian ethics are described as humanistic. Confucian ethics are characterized by the promotion of virtues, encompassed by the Five Constants. The Five Constants are 1) Rén (仁, benevolence, humaneness) is the Confucian virtue denoting the good feeling a virtuous human experience when being altruistic. 2) Yì (義/义, righteousness or justice) 3) Lǐ (禮/礼, proper rite), when referring to its realisation in the context of human individual …show more content…

While they both give the impression that they have similar philosophies, they focus on the individual. They appear to represent different methods of thinking about the world around us. The main difference between the two philosophies lies in their focus.
Confucianism is more earthly. Confucianism focuses on the social of everyday life and lays stress on ethics and ritual. Confucianism's philosophy is inherently a social creature that has the capacity of being good. You become superior if you behave in such a way that is expected by the greater harmonious society. Taoism is different because it is more out of this world. The main idea of this philosophy is to embrace the Tao. It also concentrates on the person’s relationship to himself to achieve inner harmony.
