Solomon Ortiz a former U.S. Representative of Texas once said, “Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.” Why do teachers give so much homework? What do the students learn from homework? How does giving to much homework affect a student? Where do students learn more doing their homework or in the classroom? What is the cause of too much homework? Do teachers give too much homework? There are debates about whether or not teachers give too much homework. Some people said, “That there was way too much homework,” and other said, that teachers give not enough. Teachers give students homework not to make it hard on them, but to see if they know what they are doing. Homework is a practice for the students, but it helps teachers know whether or not each student know what he or she is doing. By the time a test come what if the students don’t know what they are doing, the homework would help he or she and the teacher know what the student doesn’t get about the lesson. There are many causes of too much homework. Some students say that they lose sleep from trying to attempt to finish all their homework. Some students say that’s when they start to give up on it they stop doing homework; that’s when they start falling behind. Instead of asking for help they just start to fall farther behind. Teachers say it there fault but how does a student do their homework if they don’t know what they are doing. Some teachers say well you should ask for help, but sometimes students don’t ask for help because they are scared or they do not know how to ask for
Is homework more trouble than it is worth? Many students would say it is. Often times, students will work on homework for several hours a day and produce no results. Whether it is in tests, quizzes, or real life situations, improvement does not always show in the results. In fact, homework can cause many different problems. Teachers should stop assigning homework so students will not feel as stressed about school, will have more time to do activities, will have less strain in their relationships, and will not have the negative effects that homework brings.

Once a child exceeds a certain amount of homework, then it is no longer beneficial for the child’s education. An excessive amount of homework can essentially become harmful to the child’s education. As a result, teachers are struggling with finding the right amount of homework to assign to students. The National Education Association as well as the National Parent-Teacher Association endorse the “10-minute rule” for teachers to follow when assigning homework to students. If a child is assigned an excessive amount of homework, then the child might experience more harm than good when attempting to complete the assigned homework.
Students should get homework because they learn key morals from it that they should learn. In the article “The Importance of Homework and Studying”, the author Diane Ravitch supports homework, saying that “they provide an opportunity for children to develop self-discipline, study habits, and time management skills.”. These skills will help the students further in the future, and also “Children can set homework goals and enjoy a feeling of accomplishment when the goals are met.”. This will make the student feel more responsible and confident in them.
In my opinion, homework is very lengthy and over-done. Some teachers give multiple pages or packets of homework each night. My argument is not that homework should disappear completely, but that there should be a limit to how much a teacher gives per week. In other words, the homework should be shorter. The article The Trouble With Homework by Anne Murphy Paul says that most homework is “busy work”. This means that teachers constantly give homework just to keep the students busy, when it actually doesn’t benefit the student whatsoever.
In The Battle 0ver Homework, Harris Cooper defines homework as, “tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be carried out during non-school hours” (27) Common homework assignments might include reading, writing, problems to solve, a school project, or other skills to be practiced. The purpose of homework is to assist in reinforcing what was taught in class. Sometimes the purpose is to gather extra information beyond what was taught that day. There are many teachers who don’t understand the meaning of homework and just give it as something to keep students busy. Homework should be given to students on a regular basis but only in reasonable amounts.
The quality of students’ homework is much more important than the quantity of students homework and data collected during recent studies has proven that homework is not making the grade. “. . . American students are entangled in the middle of international academic rankings: 17th in reading, 23rd in science, and 31st in math according to the most recent results from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)” (Murphy-Paul). Students should not be given an excessive amount of homework because the pressure of having to complete excessive amounts of homework every night is quite daunting for most students. Knowing how much homework is the right amount correlates with age and grade. An 8th grade student should not be given a myriad of homework that would keep her awake past midnight completing assignments. In any case, there should be a limit on the amount of homework all teachers give to students because an excessive amount of homework would eventually cause students to become uninterested in school and learning, which could result in poor test scores and low ranks in international academic rankings. In order for students to carry out daily activities throughout the day restfully, teachers must be able to provide homework that does not exceed the appropriate amount of time needed to complete it, which is based on grade level. Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not mind work load. They feel doing the problems,writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps them because they practice and remember the material. A question that has come up is whether assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it’s definition, will help students master material better than assigning less or none at all. When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
First of all, students should not get homework is it is one cause of stress. If students don't get their homework done they can get stressed. In some cases stress can cause depression or worse things. It’s just not good.
