Liberalism vs Conservatism and the Blurring of Lines Essay

People can often be heard spewing nonsensical political jargon such as belonging to either the “Right” or “Left”, but what exactly does belonging to and holding such positions mean? There are a countless many political parties to which one can belong and although there are those who believe that they can be broken into the two categories and schools of thought; namely that of Liberalism and Conservatism, they are, without a doubt, completely wrong; However, before we address that, let us proceed to define these two ambiguous terms.
As Jonathan Heidt, a social psychologist stated in a 2008 presentation, at TED (the Technological, Entertainment and Design conferences), Conservatism and Liberalism operate at opposite ends of two extremes. …show more content…

Additionally, Liberals advocate for government regulation of economy, on the pretense of protecting the common man against monopolies, trusts, massive corporation and the like; but are against any intervention on the social level; meaning that people should be free to do and believe whatever they please, assuming it’s not against the law; and are against anything that interferes with free choice; to some extent, they believe that corporations are greedy and can’t be trusted. They feel that the government should work in the public interest and that it must act to protect individuals.
On the other hand, modern day Conservatives, as their title suggests, are “resistant to [overly radical] progress [and generally speaking, are] hostile to the increase of governmental power [(in terms of regulating commerce and the like)], defensive of tradition and [are] supportive of free market capitalism".1 They “…believe in individualism… [, meaning] little government intervention in [terms of] economy [as well as] society… [and] tend to believe in the virtue of the status quo and [subscribe to] traditional moral… and religious values [as a bases for their political statements and beliefs].”2
