Confucianism as an Ethical System

Is Confucianism a religion? The answer is not a simple one. It seems almost arrogant for me, a student in the western world, to proclaim an announcement on one of Asia’s largest belief systems. Certainly some of its followers believe it to be a religion. Others may believe it to be an ethical system. From my outside perspective based on what we have learned, I believe Confucius did not intend to create a religion. This does not necessarily preclude Confucianism from being a religion. Reasoned arguments could certainly be made either way. Confucius took great care to make clear that he was adding nothing new. Everything he taught came from exhaustively studying history. He urged his followers to effectively check his sources. I’m not aware of any religion that was developed exclusively through reason. That’s one thing that makes Confucianism unique. The greatest example of symbols is probably ancestor worship, but one could argue that it isn’t so much a symbol, but another form of relationship. Confucius emphasized relationships. Specifically the five relationships. I would argue that these relationships are evidence of Confucianism as an ethical system rather than a religion. Confucius worried himself only with how to better oneself and one’s community. Not how to please a God, get into Heaven, or keep karma balanced. Most have a system by which the world makes sense. Confucianism doesn’t seem to bother with why things are the way they are, but it does seem to focus on how people should interact with one another, nature, and government. Confucius is famously quoted as saying why would he worry about the afterlife when he’s still understanding this one. He focuses on life as it is, learning from history. He doesn’t give much time to before or after life, feeling that present life is more pressing. Clearly, Confucianism is meant to guide you through the world. Not explain it.
