Chinese Thinkers As turmoil spread across China people sought to find peace and order. As 500 B.C. and 200 B.C. passed three philosophers tried to seek ways to spread peace. Confucianism, Daoism and Legalism were the philosophers solutions. Villages fell as armies sent to destroy neighboring enemies. As the Period of the Warring States commenced thousands of people died in battles they never wanted to fight. As the clashed went on, Confucius, Laozi, and Hanfeizi created three major theories developed. Confucius created a theory to develop a peaceful society. Daoism was made by Laozi. Even though scholars don’t know if Laozi was real or fake he was also called “The Old Master.” Ideas of the Dao were written in Dao De Jing also called “The Way of the Dao.” In Daoism you had to give up worldly desires in order to seek inner peace and live with nature. Daoism teaches people to behave and also teaches them to respect nature. The solution of Daoism brought China back with peace. (Spielvogel 290) Another perspective for building order in China was Legalism. This theory believed that society needed a system of laws to bring order. Hanfeizi, creator of Legalism, created Legalism in 200 B.C.E. He believed and taught that human natural nature was evil. In order to make humans so their duties he issued strict laws and punishments. A strong ruler was necessary to enforce laws and maintain order , and the rules should be cruel.
