Chapter 6.1, Problem 1R
Summary Introduction

To review:

The formation of a membrane bilayer by the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions of phospholipids.

Introduction:

The cell membrane of the cell is dynamic in nature. It is made up of phospholipids. Phospholipids are divided into two parts: the head part is hydrophilic in nature and the tail part is hydrophobic in nature. Proteins are also present in the lipid bilayer.

How do we know that membrane phospholipids regularly intermingle and move laterally, but rarely flip from one side of the phospholipid bilayer to the other?
Describe the lipid bilayer structure of a cell membrane. What are the roles of proteins in membrane structure?
What materials can easily diffuse through the lipid bilayer, and why? What is receptor-mediated endocytosis said to be more selective than phagocytosis or pinocytosis? What do osmosis, diffusion, filtration, and the movement of ions away from like charges all have in common? In what do they differ?
