To review:
From the given graph, whether the pattern of occurrence of El Nino and La Nina is fixed or not is to be determined.
Introduction:
El Nino is a Southern oceanic phenomenon that occurs on the western coast of South America and the east coast of Australia, usually around the time of Christmas. The ocean water warms up by a change in the wind direction, and the warm water is pushed towards the western coast of South America. As a result of this, the anchovy fish die, and thus, the food chain is disrupted. The birds that feed on these birds and whose dung (guano) is a source of fertilizer, also decline in number. Thus, the overall economy Peru, Ecuador, and Chile suffers upon the arrival of El Nino. The reverse condition of El Nino is called La Nina.

- We know that hurricanes form above warm ocean water. And it's thought that warmer water can lead to stronger hurricanes. The Earth warmed one degree Fahrenheit over the 20th Century. Warming is causing sea surface temperatures to climb. Has the warming climate had an impact on hurricanes? This is an area of active research. One way that scientists are trying to answer this question is by looking at the history of hurricanes. The graph below on the left shows the total number of hurricanes that happened in each region during three time periods. The graph on the right shows the number of very strong hurricanes that happened over the same three time periods.
