Answer to Problem 5.71P

The profile of sprue diameter as function of its height is shown in Figure-A.

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

The diameter at top of the sprue is dt=100mm .

The height of the sprue is h=300mm .

The diameter at bottom of the sprue is db=300mm .

Formula used:

The expression for the area is given as,

  A=π4d2

Here, d is the diameter.

Calculation:

The relation between area and height can be given as,

  A1A2=hh1

Here, A1 is the area of top of the sprue at the height h1 , and A is the area of the top surface at height h .

Evaluate the above equation further,

  A1A2=h h 1 ( π 4 d 1 2 )( π 4 d 2 )=h h 1 d2=d12h h 1 d=d1h10.25h0.25 ...... (1)

In equation 1, take d1h10.25 as constant and replace with k .

Here, equation 1 becomes,

  d=d1h10.25h0.25d=kh0.25 ...... (2)

As the reference location for the height is not known, take h0 as the location of reference.

So, the location of surface at height from top surface is h0+h .

Substitute the value in equation 2,

  d=k(h0+h)0.25 ...... (3)

Further applying the boundary conditions,

At h=0 and d=0.1m .

Substitute the values in equation 3,

  d=k( h 0+h)0.250.1m=k( h 0)0.25k=0.1( h 0)0.25 ...... (4)

At h=0.3m and d=0.025m ,

Substitute the values in equation 3,

  d=k( h 0+h)0.250.0.25m=k(0.3+ h 0)0.25k=0.1(0.3+ h 0)0.25 ...... (5)

Solve equation 4 and 5,

  0.1( h 0)0.25=0.025(0.3+ h 0)0.25 ( 0.3+ h 0 ) 0.25 ( h 0 ) 0.25=4256h0=h0+0.3h0=1.176×103m

Substitute the value in equation 4,

  k=0.1(1.176× 10 3)0.25k=0.0185

Substitute the values in equation 3,

  d=k( h 0+h)0.25d=(0.0185)[( 1.176× 10 3 )+h]0.25

The graph further can be plotted between the diameter and sprue height using the above equation.

A drawing operation is performed on 3.0 mm stock. The part is a cylindrical cup with height H = 50 mm and inside diameter Dp = 70 mm. Find the required starting blank diameter Db. Do not find the blank diameter. My question is why is the formula for the volume of cup = pi*Dp*h*t + pi*Dp2*t / 4. Are u able to illustrate it in the picture as i had trouble visualizing it A picture of the cylindrical cup is given.
Please give the solution clearly, I will vitebit up for your effort if it is correct, thank you in advance
You rejected the question, but the question already asks for internal and external diameter values. Please solve this.
