Answer to Problem 33AAP

The number of atoms in a critically sized nucleus for the homogeneous nucleation of pure platinum is 641atoms.

Explanation of Solution

Express the volume of critical size nucleus.

 V=43π(r)3                                                                                        (I)

Here, critical radius is r.

Since platinum has a FCC structure, each unit cell has 4 atoms.

Express the volume of platinum.

 VPt=a3                                                                                                  (II)

Here, side of a FCC unit cell is a.

Express the volume per atom.

 Vatom=VPtn                                                                                                 (III)

Here, number of atoms per FCC unit cell is n.

Express the number of atoms in a critically sized nucleus for the homogeneous nucleation of pure platinum.

 VVatom                                                                                                 (IV)

Conclusion:

For platinum, write the critical radius as:

 r=1.11×107cm

Write the side of a FCC platinum unit cell.

 a=0.3293×109m

Substitute 1.11×107cm for r in Equation (I).

 V=43π(1.11×107cm)3=5.73×1021cm3

Substitute 0.3293×109m for a in Equation (II).

 VPt=(0.3293×109m)3=3.574×1029m3[106cm3m3]=3.574×1023cm3

Substitute 3.574×1023cm3 for VPt and 4atoms/FCCunitcell for n in Equation (III).

 Vatom=3.574×1023cm34atoms/FCCunitcell=8.935×1024cm3/atom

Substitute 5.73×1021cm3 for V and 8.935×1024cm3/atom for Vatom in Equation (IV).

 VVatom=5.73×1021cm38.935×1024cm3/atom=641atoms

Hence, the number of atoms in a critically sized nucleus for the homogeneous nucleation of pure platinum is 641atoms.
