Chapter 44.1, Problem 2SB
Summary Introduction

To review:

The difference between an open and closed circulatory system and the reason behind the inability of humans to function with an open circulatory system.

Introduction:

Different organisms possess different kinds of circulatory systems, which have evolved into two different types of the circulatory systems, which are closed and open circulatory system. Open circulatory system is one where body tissues and organs are surrounded by a fluid called hemolymph. This type of circulatory system is mainly found in invertebrates except for earthworm. The closed circulatory system has blood vessels. These blood vessels run transversely through the body and transport oxygen and blood to different organs.

Why don't protists (eg. sponges) need circulatory systems?   Question 12 options:   None of their cells are in contact with their externl environment so that waste can not diffuse out of their bodies.   All of their cells are in contact with their external environment so that nutrients and oygen can diffuse into cells.   This is a misleading question because all animals have circulatory systems.   They are such simple animals that they don't need oxygen.
Why is closed circulatory system considered advantageous?
Why is a closed circulatory system more efficient than an open circulatory system?
