Chapter 41, Problem 2ITD
Summary Introduction

To review:

Whether any of the given pairs of birds do not support the hypothesis of researchers.

Introduction:

The olfactory receptors are located in the nose of vertebrates. Olfactory bulbs are part of brain where olfactory nerves form synapses with interneurons and send signals to cerebral cortex of brain in the form of action potential. The chemical present in environment act as cues that trigger the generation of action potential in the olfactory receptors. It has been observed that the olfactory bulb is larger in case of diurnal birds.

Listen The following passage comes from an abstract in a study about analyzing hearing loss in twins: "A clinical and genetic study on 25 twin pairs with at least one deaf member was performed. Concordance rate of hearing loss was 0.88 in MZ and 0.50 in DZ pairs" (MZ =monozygotic or identical twins. DZ -Dizygotic or fraternal twins). From this data alone, what can you conclude about the roles of environment and genetics in hearing loss? Explain how you reached your conclusion.
The four-eyed fish, Anableps anableps, really has only two eyes, which function as four, enabling the fish to see clearly through both air and water. A. anableps is a surface feeder, so the ability to see above water helps it locate prey such as insects. Its unique eyes also enable it to scan simultaneously for predators attacking from above (such as birds) or below (such as other fish). This species of fish crafted by natural selection.(a) is an example of coevolution (b) has an evolutionary adaptation (c) is an example of sympatric speciation (d) is an example of allopatric speciation
The olfactory system uses population coding to discriminate one scent from another. Choose the answer option that best describes the population coding system. When a scent is detected, the olfactory system rapidly changes the makeup of the population of receptors in the olfactory epithelium, to accommodate the new input. Different species of organisms have evolved their own species-specific population of olfactory receptors. There is a large population of olfactory receptor types, one type for each scent an organism can recognize. Each scent input creates a unique pattern of activation across a limited number of receptor types.
