Chapter 41, Problem 2ITD
Summary Introduction
To review:
Whether any of the given pairs of birds do not support the hypothesis of researchers.
Introduction:
The olfactory receptors are located in the nose of vertebrates. Olfactory bulbs are part of brain where olfactory nerves form synapses with interneurons and send signals to cerebral cortex of brain in the form of action potential. The chemical present in environment act as cues that trigger the generation of action potential in the olfactory receptors. It has been observed that the olfactory bulb is larger in case of diurnal birds.

The following passage comes from an abstract in a study about analyzing hearing
loss in twins:
"A clinical and genetic study on 25 twin pairs with at least one deaf member was
performed. Concordance rate of hearing loss was 0.88 in MZ and 0.50 in DZ pairs"
(MZ =monozygotic or identical twins. DZ -Dizygotic or fraternal twins). From this
data alone, what can you conclude about the roles of environment and genetics in
hearing loss? Explain how you reached your conclusion.
The four-eyed fish, Anableps anableps, really has only two eyes, which function as four, enabling the fish to see clearly through both air and water. A. anableps is a surface feeder, so the ability to see above water helps it locate prey such as insects. Its unique eyes also enable it to scan simultaneously for predators attacking from above (such as birds) or below (such as other fish). This species of fish crafted by natural selection.(a) is an example of coevolution (b) has an evolutionary adaptation (c) is an example of sympatric speciation (d) is an example of allopatric speciation
The olfactory system uses population coding to discriminate one scent from another. Choose the
answer option that best describes the population coding system.
When a scent is detected, the olfactory system rapidly changes the makeup of the population of receptors in
the olfactory epithelium, to accommodate the new input.
Different species of organisms have evolved their own species-specific population of olfactory receptors.
There is a large population of olfactory receptor types, one type for each scent an organism can recognize.
Each scent input creates a unique pattern of activation across a limited number of receptor types.

Sensory transduction involves the conversion (by either a direct or indirect mechanism) of a physical or chemical stimulus into changes in membrane potential difference. b. Sensory adaptation plays a role in the ability of organisms to discriminate between important and unimportant information. c. The term "sensory adaptation" refers to the process by which a sensory cell becomes less sensitive, or less responsive, to a continuing source of stimulation. d. - Include a 5-10 sentence explanation of how the sheep’s eye senses light and relays that data to the brain to interpret visual information. Some pieces to consider: What path does the light travel? What structures and pigments does it interact with? How does the signal travel to the brain? Where in the brain is the data processed? How is this different in the high light vs low light? How might the sheep’s vision differ from our own?arrow_forwardElectronic pest control is the name given to several types of electrically powered devices designed to repel pests, such as insects. Ultrasonic devices have shown promise in repelling insect pest species. They emit short wavelength, high-frequency sound waves that can be detected by insects but are too high-pitched to be detected by humans. The following table shows the maximum end of the hearing range of frequencies detectable by various organisms (Table 1). To investigate the effectiveness of ultrasonic devices in dispersing pest insects, scientists collected data from two different regions. Region 1: a rural crop-growing region where insecticides are applied for crop protection Region 2: a protected nature reserve that is managed for conservation and researchScientists measured the population density of insects in both regions before and after activating two different kinds of ultrasonic devices. The first ultrasonic device emitted sound at a frequency of 40 kHz and the second…arrow_forwardOf the following statements about the human eye, which would Paley agree with the most? A. - You are a wildlife biologist researching black rhinos. During your time in Africa, you have observed two particular traits that allow some black rhinos to be better adapted to their environment. The first trait is an extra-long prehensile lip that enables the rhino to have more efficient browsing capabilities than rhinos with the usual size prehensile lip. Second, some of the rhinos in the study have extra-large ears that allow them to hear a potential predator earlier than rhinos with normal size ears. If you could breed black rhinos that have both of these good traits (an extra-long prehensile lip (P) and bigger ears (E), it wouldincrease their chance for survival in the wild. You have chosen the following two rhinos to enter into a breeding program for the two desired phenotypic traits. It has been determined (based on your previous research) that both the desired traits are homozygous recessive. Parent 1: Heterozygous dominant for prehensile lip trait. Heterozygous for the longer…arrow_forwardDistinguish between static and dynamic equilibrium. The sense of equilibrium (balance) is really two senses— static equilibrium and dynamic equilibrium—that come from different sensory organs. The organs of static equilibrium (stat′ik e″kwı˘-lib′re-um) sense the position of the head, maintaining balance, stability and posture when the head and body are still. When the head and body suddenly move or rotate, the organs of dynamic equilibrium (di-nam′ik e″kwı˘- lib′re-um) detect such motion and aid in maintaining balance.arrow_forwardYou want to distinguish between two hypotheses to explain the patterns you see: 1) Males not feeding the young is an adaptation to dimorphism 2) If males don't feed the young in a species, it will allow them to become brightly colored To begin to address this question, map the characters changes in dimorphism and males feeding the young onto each of the trees on the previous page.
