Answer to Problem 4PEB

The wood having density 0.81 g/cm3 would be appropriate to model continental crust. Wood having density 0.90 g/cm3 is required to model oceanic crust.

Explanation of Solution

Write the equation that can be used to calculate the density of the wood.

ρcrustρmantle=ρwoodρwater (I)

After multiplying ρwater on both side,

ρwater(ρcrustρmantle)=(ρwoodρwater)ρwater (II)

ρwood=ρwater(ρcrustρmantle) (III)

Here, ρcrust is the density of crust, ρmantle is the density of mantle, ρwood is the density of wood and ρwater is the density of oil.

Conclusion:

i) Continental crust

Substitute 1.0gcm3 for ρwater, 3.3gcm3 for ρmantle, and 2.7gcm3 for ρcrust.in equation (III) to find the value of ρwood.

=1.0gcm3(2.7gcm33.3gcm3)=1.0(2.73.3)gcm3(gcm3gcm3)=0.81gcm3

Therefore, the density of wood should be 0.81gcm3 to model the continental crust.

ii) Oceanic crust

Substitute 1.0gcm3 for ρoil, 3.3gcm3 for ρmantle, and 3.0gcm3 for ρcrust.in equation (III) to find the value of ρwood.

=1.0gcm3(3.0gcm33.3gcm3)=1.0(3.03.3)gcm3(gcm3gcm3)=0.90gcm3

Therefore, the density of wood should be 0.90gcm3 to model the oceanic crust.
