Chapter 13.5, Problem 5P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

A reasonable mechanism is to be written for the given reaction of benzene with acetylhypoiodite.

Concept introduction:

On iodination with acetylhypoiodite, benzene undergoes an electrophilic aromatic substitution where a hydrogen atom of the aromatic ring is substituted by an iodine atom.

The acetylhypoiodite acts as an electrophile while the aromatic ring acts as a nucleophile.

The attack of aromatic π electrons on iodine atom of acetylhypoiodite is the slow step. Therefore, this step is the rate determining step.

For dissolution of dopant ZrO2 into the host lattice of Y2O3, does the following defect reaction satisfy the requirements of mass conservation, charge neutrality, and site balance (stoichiometry)? 2 ZrO2 -(Y2O3) -> 2 ZrY + 3 Ox + ½ O2 (g) + 2eʹ
Describe the mechanism by which stereoregular polyolefins are formed in heterogeneous coordination polymerization. Complete the reaction scheme below, showing initiation, propagation and transfer to monomer steps in the synthesis of isotactic polypropylene. The catalyst, R-MLn, represents a crystalline organometallic compound, where M is a metal atom with a vacant d-orbital, R is an alkyl group directly attached to the metal atom; and Ln represents a halide ligand set. Assume all chain ends are terminated by transfer to monomer. R-MLn +
