Throughout its history, artificial intelligence has always been a topic with much controversy. Should human intelligence be mimicked? If so, are there ethical bounds on what computers should be programmed to do? These are a couple of question that surround the artificial intelligence controversy. This paper will discuss the pros and cons of artificial intelligence so that you will be able to make an educated decision on the issue. What is Artificial Intelligence? The first step in getting anywhere with this debate must begin with defining what artificial intelligence is exactly. Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is the area of computer science focusing on creating machines that can engage in the human behaviors of intelligence. …show more content…
ITSs will offer considerable flexibility in presentation of material and a greater ability to respond to student needs. CONS of AI Every controversial issue has its downside. Some of the cons of AI include: Cost Loss of jobs Losing social life Ethical Issues Fear Cost Perhaps the single most obvious con is the amount of funding that has gone into AI research. Federal funding is critical because it can sustain long-term high-risk research and provide a collection of technical and human resources. The big question is whether such funding is justifiable. In a world where poverty, disease, and hunger still plague the less fortunate, wouldn't the billions of dollars be better spent aiding those in need? Why should we worry about the possibility of artificial life when we still haven't conquered our more immediate problems? Funding is the smallest problem of AI. Losing Jobs in the Industry Many people fear that adding AI to industries will mean a decrease in jobs, which it will. Many fields will feel the effect of AI, if not today, in the near future. Assembly lines that once contained humans, now contain robots. Check-out clerks at stores are gradually being replaced with self check-out machines. Bank tellers aren't used as often because of the ease of automated teller machine (ATM) banking. In fact, some banks charge a fee if you use their tellers for transactions that can be made at an ATM. In the previous section, it was stated that AI
One of the positive potentials of artificial intelligence is making risky jobs easier and safer to accomplish. Clearly, it will knowingly make things easier for scientist and researchers, particularly those who are involved in studies where human lives are in danger. Scientists no longer have to deal with many of space exploration’s safety issues. Further, space exploration costs will drop immensely. For example, NASA and space organizations will no longer have to spend millions of tax dollars on research for space suits. This excess of money can either go to other research projects or back to us, the
In the New York Times article, “Is Artificial Intelligence Taking Over Our Lives?” they introduce the topic if whether or not our lives will soon revolve around technology at every corner that we see worldwide, whether it being robotic cops to robotic doctors. Introduced in this article were 3 main debaters over the topic being for and against the idea that our artificial intelligence & its growth is a good or bad idea.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most breath-taking topics in science and technology fields today. While the time frame of its real emergence has long been the focus of debates, the moral concern of such a practice is a more urgent question for the human race to answer. Authors and pundits from Mary Shelley in 1818 to Stephen Spielberg in 2001 have expressed their views on this problem already. British computer scientist Alan Turing was asked the question “can machines think?” half a decade ago, after
Ethical issues that revolve around computer/electrical engineers may seem subtle when glanced at. However, looking at these issues in a narrow scope there are inconsistencies where people may lose their lives because of our faults. I would like to analyze the issues caused by programming. To be specific, artificial intelligence is the core subject under programming that has a particular subcase that is affected. This subject is automation which includes, but not limited to, robotics and human machine interface. The specific topics can be interrelated when viewing it in a computer/electrical engineer’s perspective. They pose both good and bad situations for consumers which I will evaluate for each case. Keep in mind that automation is a
So far, we have seen what Artificial Intelligence is. Now let’s know about the benefits and risks related to AI.
If robots take our jobs, people won’t have to work as much, nevertheless, this creates an urgency to distribute our assets evenly. It is not impossible for a rich individual, to disband the workers only to utilize AI as free labour. A situation like this, would lead to everyone but the wealthy owner to vanish, like an animal species being eradicated by natural selection. Thus, the biggest risk of AI could subsequently depend on the human factor. Hence, the only valid disadvantage of AI, might in fact be ourselves, our own greed. If people restrain from selfishly exploiting the power of AI, the advantages will allow society and humanity to grow even further. Therefore, with the highest probability, AI will only make our lives
In our rapidly changing world, Artificial Intelligence is making great strides in the fields of medicine, space research, and humanoid robotics. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of, one’s ethical and moral values. Many individuals feel it is demeaning to create a robot that behaves like a human. Whereas some are convinced that there will be a need for AI humanoids, others maintain that this tremendous advancement in technology will lead to the destruction of mankind. Although I agree with some of the advances in AI technology up to a point, I cannot accept the overall conclusion that this technology will always have a safe or positive outcome.
Like all leaps in technological advancement, the rise of artificial intelligence has instilled unease in the general public. People who fear change will attempt to obstruct or delay it and in some cases prove to be beneficial, however in the case of “AI”, regulation of its research is still premature. Currently the definition of AI is "that activity devoted to making machines intelligent, and intelligence is that quality that enables an entity to function appropriately and with foresight in its environment"(Etzioni), and although we have been able to create machinery to mimic such a function, the required “cognitive” ability still hasn’t been developed.
Since AI has been around, they started to take part in everything and started replacing human workers. One most significant example is most factories nowadays are using program-controlled robots and machines to perform high danger and repetitive task instead of having human workers to perform those jobs in order to increase the efficiency, lower the long-term cost, and also minimize the risk of having casualties. The impact of AI in the job market is enormous. And according to U.S. workers face higher risk of being replaced by robots. Here's why by Alanna Petroff, the impact of AI in job market is in fact, still growing and may widen the gap between
AI and robots is going to be permeating through our daily life in the future, and it’s happening right now. People are building AIs and robots to reduce our basic work fields such as manufacturing, farming, complicated calculation etc. to improve our work efficiency and have better quality of life. Also, it could improve various fields of work in biotechnology, digitalization, and physics that humans could not accomplish. By just looking at the positive aspects of having AIs and robots, AI and robots would make utopian lives for humans in the future. However, in reality, we should seriously consider side effects that this intelligent machine could bring to our lives and society. The first thing that comes to our mind when we think of increasing role of AIs and robots is a reduction of the workforce in many areas, and it makes humans helpless of their capabilities because AI and robot will substitute most of human works starting from basic work fields, and occurring right now. Additionally, there would be ethical issues related to this technology in various ways. Humans naturally fear changes in their lives or something, and it is their natural instinct, which feeling safer for conserving the present state. Although, being cautious is truly necessary before the new change, we have to adapt the new change, and prepare for the solutions about the negative effects that this new technology would bring.
Artificial intelligence seems to be taking over this world more and more each day. It has its positives such as makes life easier, error reduction, and useful for menial tasks, but at the same time has its negatives; artificial intelligence has its anxieties about runaway artificial intelligence being warranted such as its expensive, cannot replicate a human, creates unemployment, and the A.I. can be misused if in the wrong hands.
Artificial Intelligence “is any intellect that vastly outperforms the best human brains in practically every field” (Bostrom). Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the highest forms of technology that we can create and can benefit the world in many ways if done correctly. The United States need to focus more resources on building this technology because there is no moral issues about building AI; working on it now is much safer than waiting for someone else, another nation or a group of people, to build it incorrectly; and AI can solve many if not all of humanities problems.
What is artificial intelligence?Artificial intelligence (AI) would be the possession of intelligence, or the exercise of thought, by machines such as computers.Artificial intelligence (AI), the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.Where do we find it in our everyday lives?Applications as diverse as medical diagnosis, computer search engines, and voice or handwriting recognition.Toysautomated cars, automated cookers, automated cat litter boxes, automated truck fleet management. How does the use of AI make our lives better/worse?Human beings can’t just plug in more servers when we reach our limits processing new information. Instead, we must rely on our own, often biased, preferences, habits, and rules of thumb.Smart assistants, such as “Siri” or “Alexa”, use machine learning to interpret voice commands, email servers use the technique to better filter out junk mail, and some e-commerce websites use it to personalize the web experience of their users. Is it affecting our economy?"I was just at the B20 Digitization Task Force in Berlin in December, and a few things stuck with me in what they have found. 40% of economic growth will come from digitalization and technology. A 20% increase in the overall technology investment will directly result in 1% of economic growth on a global basis, which is huge."- Forrester predicted that robots and AI will replace 7 percent of US jobs by 2025.IDC also found
Artificial intelligence, theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as speaking, decision-making etc. When most people think of artificial intelligence (Al), they think of the robots from the movie Chappie, or I, Robot. Those are some examples of what AI could lead to but that is not exactly it. The idea of intelligent machines go back to Greek mythology. The origin of AI can be described as philosophers who tried to explain human thinking as a significant system. However, the field of Al wasn’t properly found until 1956, in a conference in Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where the term Al was first used. Since then Ideas have been exchanged and introduced through literature and recently movies. Living with such intelligence will transform our lives and remodel the way we live.
Many people in this world have heard about the Artificial Intelligence (AI) but they never knew how it was developed and how is t growing. AI has been planned for years and is still one of the most mysterious subjects in Computer Science. In this essay I will be taking you into more of a short summary of Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence has been one of the most important things that was invented and without it we would not have gotten to where we are in technology. This partly due to how large and imprecise the subject is. Artificial Intelligence ranges from machines truly capable of thinking to search algorithms
