The expected pattern starts at 0-3 years where a child is expected to develop the most. They have little control over their bodies at 0-1 years and are dependent on their natural instincts e.g. sucking, grasping but when the child has more control over their body they will start to crawl and eventually progress to walking. By the age of 3 as well as
*Physical development: At the ages of 3 and 4, a child will learn to jump, tiptoe, go up and down stairs, catch, climb and throw, paint, thread beads, use scissors, draw people and houses.
1. Explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development from birth – 19years.
Children between the ages of 3-5 start to gain at least 4-5 pounds (in weight) and grow about 2-3 inches taller per year. Younger children are still developing their motor skills, for example using their arms and legs to play and by doing arts and crafts, puzzles and painting. By the age of 5 children are usually able to hop on one foot and are learning how to skip. Playing becomes very imaginative for them as they bring in fantasy and book characters into their games.

| From birth to 12 months is a fast period of physical development. When first born babies have very little control over their bodies, they depend upon a series of reflexes for movement, however over the first 12 months they will learn how to control their bodies and by 12 months should be able to crawl or roll. By the age of 2 a baby would have developed quickly and learned how to walk, point, grasp, feed themselves and possibly also dress themselves. By the age of 3 a child will have defined their motor skills and will have more control over holding pencils and turning pages in a book. Children will
| * Feeding 5-8 times a day * Sleeping 20 hours a day * Makes basic distinctions within the first month in the sensory capacities; vision, hearing, smelling, tasting, touch, temperature and pain. * Visual exploration and colour perception develops further into months 2 and 3. * Muscle control is developed; control of eye movement, kicking legs and the ability to lift head whilst on stomach.
On top of the expected pattern of children and young people’s development including “physical, communication & intellectual & social, emotional & behavioural development there are also “personal and external” factors which will affect how they develop.

| Walking, pointing with arms, starting to dress themselves, holding light objects.Interacting with balls, climbing stairs or furniture, using crayons etc with more controlled, starting to run with confidence and feeding themselves.
During this time period the child tends to have a lot of energy so they star to jump around and run, and they also discover new things they can do such as standing on one leg and hopping. From the ages 2-3 they also start t develop the thought of picking up a pencil and doodling. From the ages between the ages of 3-5 they develop the abilities of movement and balance which they learn how to throw and catch a ball and often start to ride a bike/tricycle.
From birth a baby can only lie on its back, by the end of 3months they start to lift their heads and kick their feet. At 3-6 months they can hold objects and transfer them from one hand to another. They also start to attempt to put objects in their mouths. At 9-12 months babies usually become more mobile by rolling, shuffling, or crawling. They can generally sit unaided for a length of time.
