Chinese Philosophies
Violence became common during the time referred to as the “Period of the Warring States.” Because violence was common in the Zhou kingdom, it started to weaken. During this war, armies were sent to destroy other enemies states. Also, villages of men, women, and children were beheaded. The Chinese people, during this period, wanted to find ways to restore the order to society. As a result, three well-known Chinese thinkers with extremely different perspectives offered a solution for these troubled times. These philosophies included: Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism.
Confucianism was one of the philosophies that was one solution to create a peace to society. Confucius was the founder of Confucianism, who was known to be ancient China’s first great thinker and teacher. He felt that the Chinese people needed a sense of duty. Furthermore, a duty means that these people should do what others and the community need before they complete their own needs for themselves. In this philosophy, there was the Golden Rule, which was, “Do unto others as you would have unto to you.” Moreover, the rule means people should treat others the way they want to be treated. Laozi was the founder of Daoism, and he was known to have lived around the same time as Confucius. This founder was also known as the “Old Master” to the Dao people. With Laozi being the founder of this philosophy, the teachings of Daoism were based around him. The influence that Daoism had of modern life was that it teaches the importance of nature and encourages people to treat nature with respect and reverence. The ideas of the Dao were written in the language of Dao De Jing. In this philosophy, the people believed that the others should give up all worldly desires in favor of nature and the Dao they have (Spielvogel 290-291).
