After studying the differences between liberalism and conservatism, it is differentiate the two ideologies. During the colonial era, liberals supported Democracy over monarchy and wanted freedom and rights. Conservatives, wanted to keep the monarchy. Based on these ideas, all Americans are liberal because they are in favor of freedom and rights. However, with the new ideas, now Liberals believe that the government and laws need to change for the new times.

The main purpose of the article by Matt Motyl titled, “Liberals and conservatives are (geographically) dividing” is that political parties’ affiliations are dividing the U.S. This can be seen through the locations many Americans live such as liberals going to more urban areas as opposed to the conservatives to go to less populated areas in rural states (Motyl, 2014). The author uses the Ideological Enclavement Theory to explain the division of people in the U.S through ideological-segregated enclaves (Motyl, 2014).

To be a conservative in the modern world would consist of me having to spend money a lot less and having more jobs. They think the government should make taxes less. The liberal and conservative ideologies are the two most popular political ideologies of our democratic society today. A political ideology is more or less a systematic set of ideas that perform four functions for those who hold true to that specific ideology. Liberals see themselves as champions of individual liberty who work to create or preserve an open and tolerant society, a society whose members are free to pursue their own ideas and interests with as little interference as possible. Conservatives share a desire to conserve something, usually the traditions or customary way of life in their societies. The way the two of these ideologies relate to the triadic concept of freedom is entirely different and the same goes for how the two relate to the four functions of an ideology.

The American government is divided into two essential concepts that control the political power, regulations, and opinions of its citizens. These concepts are Liberalism and Conservatism, and each holds different premise of political power. Liberals demand academic freedom and oppose the government control of press, arts, and ideas. Conservatives demand material freedom and oppose the government control of trade, business, and wealth. Liberals believe that men’s intelligence can reach to the furthest place of the universe, while Conservatives believe men have freedom to go anywhere on Earth but their minds should be restricted to keep their morality. As people get older, they constantly make up their minds about political issues, and decide which political orientation fit their backgrounds and situations. For instance, religion and education are the influential factors that influence one’s decision to be either Liberal or Conservative. In fact, I wasn’t raised in the political environment of both Liberalism and Conservatism. But the way I see things work and how our social issues are handled by the government, I consider myself to be a Liberal.

Being an American is one of the many characteristics the people of this nation share; however there are different values each one holds, and the two being focused on are Liberal and Conservative. This year is the best time to look into these values due to the Presidential Elections nominees putting their names on the ballot. Looking into each values one will get a sense of what they stand for; such as Liberals who value equality among humans and in the workforce, feminism and are more progressive. Couple examples of Liberal values, unions in the work place where everyone is treated fairly, or the latest about the wage increase for fast food workers. First we can recognize that liberals affirm that a woman has the right to decide what to do with her body. They lean on the argument that “a fetus in not a human life”, so in consequence the fetus does not have separate individual rights. On the contrary, conservatives affirm that life begins at conception. Second, talking about death penalty, liberals believe this is cruel and inhumane and that they should abolish this form of punishment. Conservatives believe that death penalty is the right measure to punish those who have taken away the life of an innocent person. Thirdly concerning the economy, liberals support a market system in which the government regulates everything. They strongly believe that they should avoid the creation of “big businesses”. Conservatives on the other hand, believe in free market, capitalism, and they support the idea of private enterprises. This free markets produce more economic growth, more jobs and higher standards of living. Fourth, talking about energy resources, liberals know oil is a scarce resource. They believe that the government should pay for the searching of alternative options for energy production. Conservatives, knowing that oil, coal, and gas are good sources of energy, are determined to keep drilling and keep searching on land and sea not caring about the harm they cause to
