Mencius and Xunzi, who both lived during the end of the Zhou Dynasty, were powerful advocates who influence the teachings of Confucianism that still lingers in China to this day. Confucianism is a philosophical ideal way of reality that inspires an integrity mindset. These principles were taught and created by man a name Confucius. Mencius was an official of the government and saw no harmony between the hierarchal feudal Kingdom and independent feudal states(). Because of this, similar to Confucius, Mencius was concerned and offered his services to teach Confucianism to the Government leaders(). It was a time when there were numerous wars that occurred due to the conflict that existed between seven states. (Watkins, 2013) These warring states were the Han, Wu, Zhao, Chu, Qi, Yan and Jin. According to Jerry H. Bentley and Herbert F. Ziegler of the book Traditions and Encounters, “This period forced some people to reflect on the nature of society, and the roles of humans beings within society.” The authors continued saying that it forced others to “identify principles that would restore political and social order.” (Bentley & Ziegler, 2011) The principles of Confucianism were established and followed in order to help the citizens of China to live and govern their communities more efficiently. Through Confucianism, Confucius helped legitimize China’s rule and bring about order in the mist of turmoil. The effects of Confucius’ principles are still seen and felt today in many aspects of modern day Chinese society. Veritably, there were points throughout Chinese history where Confucianism affected almost every aspect of life in China. The ideas of good and bad are thought to be connected to human nature. Human nature is the characteristics, feelings, and behaviours of humankind that is shared by all humans. Because good and bad are two opposite terms and it is in human nature this has led to attempts to explain how both good and bad behaviours affect peoples’ daily life. Traditions & Encounters: Chapter 8, page 185: “Confucius emphasized personal qualities like ren, li, and xiao because he believed that individuals who possessed those traits would gain influence in the larger society...only through enlightened leadership by morally strong individuals was there any hope for the restoration of political and social order in China” This quote demonstrates the main three principles that Confucianism was based upon are what Confucius believed would better society. These principles would create a stronger government, leading to better policies, and a stronger sense of unity in the people.
According to the Tao Te Ching 3, Laozi said people should not be praise man’s wisdom to avoid arguments between peoples and should not think highly of goods to prevent theft. The reason why the world is in such a disarray is that people deem highly of the wisdom, scholarship, and the goods. Laozi doesn’t like class society based on people’s difference in terms of ability. Confucius lived during the “Spring” and “Autumn” period of Chinese history, when east central China was divided into over a dozen small warring states. The great disorder and suffering he saw influenced his political ideas, which emphasized order, hierarchy and the rule of a benevolent sovereign. Confucius was a philosopher who developed a great “reverence” for Ji Dan (Duke of Zhou) of the Western Zhou dynasty, which reigned from the 11th c. to 771 BCE. He also sought to apply the political structures of that distant time to the State ofw2 Lu. However, the great social turmoil of the Spring and Autumn period, and the sharpening struggles within the ruling class, made this impossible, and he became very dissatisfied. In an effort to spread his political ideas, he travelled extensively to other states only to be repeatedly rebuffed (McEnroe, 14). He died at the age of 73, having failed to ever succeed with his society. Scholars down the ages have always maintained that "benevolence" is the core of Confucian teaching. Confucius, also known as King Qui was born in 551 BC, and passed away in 479 BC. Confucius was a government official, who then came to see that the government was growing disorder and was very chaotic. Confucius then decided to develop a new moral code due to the injustice and distress, he had seen within the system. These laws consisted of respect, honesty, education, kindness, and strong family bonds. Confucius believed that a good government was the basis for a peaceful and happy society. And to have a good government you had to have good officials. Therefore, in order to have a “good official,” you had to master the following five virtues that Confucius created. These virtues included: Li, which stood for ritual etiquette, Ren, standing for kindness, Xin, requiring faithfulness, Yi, for honesty, and Xiao, which meant having strong family values. With these virtues and laws being said Confucius believed that if people had respect and had strong bonding, then the central government would become strong and prosperous.
Confucius “The Analects”, written ca. 479-221 B.C.E., tell us what the Chinese people thought made a virtuous man. In their society, youth were supposed to be respectful to their parents at home and elders abroad. They also should “overflow in love to all, and cultivate the friendship of the good.” Men who are willing to serve their parents, prince, and be genuine with their friends are considered virtuous. They should also honor their parents’ lives through proper funeral rites and the ceremonies of sacrifice. All of these were considered right in this society. Confucius believed that if the people were punished for breaking the law, they would feel no shame about their mistakes. However, if people were led by virtue and were corrected when wrong, then they would feel shame and become good. The text continues with questions about how to change human behavior. Confucius always advises that the best way to bring about a certain behavior is through positive reinforcement and rewarding the upright. “To give one’s self earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.” In Chinese society, the “superior” man is the well-mannered, learned man. These were also the ones who were in power, while the marginalized were the women and the unlearned (Strayer 217-219).
