Concept explainers
In the 2004 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong made history by winning the race for an unprecedented sixth time. In 2005, he became the only 7-time winner and set a new record for the fastest average speed—41.65 kilometers per hour—that stands to this day. In 2012, he was banned for life for doping offenses, stripped of all of his titles and his records expunged. You can find data on all the Tour de France races in the data set Tour de France 2016. Here are the first three and last seven lines of the data set. Keep in mind that the entire data set has over 100 entries.

- Describe how you have used two topics from this chapter in your life outside of your math class during the past month.arrow_forwardUse your model to predict the sunspot number for 2001. How does your prediction compare with the actual value of 111?arrow_forwardA marathon is a long-distance race with an official distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) and today there are more than 800 marathons held annually throughout the world. The Boston Marathon became the first major marathon to include a wheelchair division competition. This happened in 1975. One might wonder how male Boston Marathon winning finish times compare with the average male Boston Wheelchair Marathon winning finish time of 98.3 minutes. Let's test whether male Boston Marathon winners, on average, take longer to finish than male Boston Wheelchair Marathon winners by performing a one-sample t-test. We'll use a significance level of ? = 0.05.arrow_forward
- Most vertebrate adult body sizes remain constant or increase throughout their lives. Marine iguanas are different in that they can actually decrease in size, in periods of low food availability. Examine the data set here, and test the hypothesis that on average across time, iguana length changed (increased) by 1 mm. Paste your R code in the answer box, and tell me your conclusion. Many people credit him with being the greatest hitter of all time. Unfortunately, his career totals are somewhat less impressive than others because his career was interrupted from 1943-1945 by World War II and from 1952-1953 by the Korean War. Some assert that if he had been playing during the war years, he would have broken Hank Aaron’s home run record of 755 and runs batted in (RBI) record of 2297. Below are Williams’ statistics.
