Textbook Question
Chapter 1, Problem 14PQ
As part of a biology field trip, you have taken an equal-arm balance (Fig. P1. 14) to the beach. Your plan was to measure the masses of various mollusks, but you forgot to bring along your set of Standard gram masses. You notice that the beach is full of pebbles. Although there are variations in color, texture, and shape, you wonder whether you can somehow use the pebbles as a Standard mass set. Develop a procedure for assembling a Standard mass set from the pebbles on the beach. Describe your procedure step by step so that someone else could follow it.

You are making a sculpture that is a pyramid with a square base . You want the height of the pyramid to be 4 inches less than the length of a side of the base . You want the volume of the sculpture to be 200 cubic inches .
a . Let x represent the length ( in inches ) of a side of the sculpture's base . Draw a diagram of the sculpture , and label the dimensions in terms of x .
b . Write a function that gives the volume V of the sculpture in terms of x .
7. A crystalline solid consists of atoms stacked up in a repeating lattice structure. Consider a crystal as shown in Figure P1.7a. The atoms reside at the corners of cubes of side L 5 0.200 nm. One piece of evidence for the regular arrangement of atoms comes from the flat surfaces along which a crystal separates, or cleaves, when it is broken. Suppose this crystal cleaves along a face diagonal as shown in Figure P1.7b. Calculate the spacing d between two adjacent atomic planes that sep- arate when the crystal cleaves.
Physical units in mechanics are usually some combination of the dimensions time T, mass M, and length L. Consider the
physical quantities m, r, u, a, and t with dimensions [m] = M, [r] = L, [u] = LT-, [a] = LT-2, and [1] = T.
Enter the dimensional expression of the quantity on the right-hand side of each equation. Your answers may contain only M, L,
T, and exponents.
Assume that each of the following equations is dimensionally consistent.
Lo = mur
[Lo] =
W = mar
[W] =
T

- The distance to the Sun is 93 miIlion miles. What is the distance to the Sun in the appropriate SI units?arrow_forwardThe SI units of mass density are kg/m3, but there are several other common units. One of the most commonly used units of mass density is gram per cubic centimeter, or g/cc. This is because pure water has a mass density of 1 g/cc. It turns out that 1 mL of liquid is equal to 1 cc of volume. So it is also possible to express the mass density of water as 1 g/mL. This makes water a useful tool since it is possible to use graduated cylinders to measure volumes.An object with a mass of 61.0 g displaces 785.0 ml of water when it is completely immersed.
