John F. Chandler (18061876)
JOHN F. CHANDLER (1806–1876), Vicar of Witley (1837), was one of the earliest as well as one of the most successful of the translators from the Latin who have done so much to enrich modern hymnody. He was first led to undertake this work by seeing some translations from the Parisian Breviary by Isaac Williams in the British Magazine. He published “The Hymns of the Primitive Church, now first collected, translated, and arranged” (1837), and “The Hymns of the Church, mostly Primitive, collected, translated, and arranged for Public Use” (1841); from which, according to Julian, some thirty or forty hymns have come into general use.
