Breaks offer employees a chance to rest, get some fresh air, eat lunch, or whatever they may please. Breaks are usually issued to those who work five or more hours, and vary in time from workplace to workplace. Employers have the power to choose whether or not to pay their employees for their breaks. Employees smoking on their free time, or while off the clock, is their personal decision and should not concern or damage their place of employment, but when taking unverified breaks from work to smoke a cigarette becomes hazardous and destructive to the business, then smoke breaks should no longer be allowed. Many may ask “why?” The following facts prove why smoke breaks should no longer be allowed. Smoke breaks promote smoking by rewarding those
Smoking is an activity that has been around for many years for people to use and adapt into their lifestyle. It is a tool that many people use to help reduce the stresses of life and put them in a comfortable position that enables them to cope with the hectic lifestyle they are living. However, smoking has been scientifically proven to cause many types of cancer, the most common being lung cancer resulting in numerous deaths across the United States. According to BBC, "Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease" (BBC, 2). Evidently, the benefits and drawbacks of smoking have been debated for many years, and only recently have some countries have placed a ban in public places such as Britain and the United
The Company’s pledge to provide a safe and healthy work environment bans smoking on Company properties, including but not limited to break areas, bathrooms, and work areas. Employees who smoke will be able to do so only on break and lunch times. They will have to go outside of the Company’s facility in the designated smoking areas on the property.
Have you ever gone to a restaurant or to the bowling alley and come home smelling like cigarette smoke? And while you were there, some people are sitting there smoking by you and you can’t stand the smell of it. So you go out side and to get some fresh air and what do you know there’s some more people lighting it up and smoking but they are polite enough to go outside. Doesn’t this annoy you, that you can barely go anywhere without people smoking in your presence. This leads us to the question, Should smoking in public areas be allowed? Smoking in public areas is something that could definitely be dealt without. The things I will cover with you are the effects of smoking, the effects of
There is no playing favorites. Employers must understand how they treat one employee, they must treat all employees. If one employee gets in trouble for taking a smoke break, that staff member outside doing the same thing should get in trouble. Allowing certain employees to do this or that when others cannot, creates a bad attitude in the workplace. We do not want this. Being consistent, shows we are fair and makes for a good reputation for how we run our company.
Employers initially constructed charming smoking zones, designating for employees as a smokers' lounge; however, the concept, satisfied no one, considering, non-smokers customarily endured walking through clouds of smoke to reach work. Employers desired the smoking accommodations close to their jobs as possible, therefore, employees required less time for their smoke breaks. (Heathfield,
In our generation smoking still exists even though there are some people who quit smoking and there are some still smoke in ages, however the only problem in our society, people who smoke around youngsters called as well as secondhand smoking is a detective around children and adults. It is important that secondhand smoke shouldn’t be smoking around their own children or underage due to health. Secondhand smoking, tobacco smoke is exhaled by a second smoker or is given off by burning tobacco and also is inhaled by someone nearby which it’s called passive Smoke. It occurs when tobacco smoke spread throughout any environment, which causes it 's inhalation by people within that particular environment. The state of being exposed to secondhand
Smokers face many challenges in the modern world, and one of the biggest happens in the workplace. Many large – and small – employers have taken a strict zero-tolerance approach to smoking in the workplace, and that can literally leave smokers with no place to
Then of course, the biggest question of all comes up: What about the people that don’t smoke? A smoker takes a five minute “smoke break”, while a non-smoker also is allowed a five minute “smoke break”. Everyone should be treated equally, with no exceptions.
My name is Pasquale Oppedisano and I think smoking should be banned in the workplace (inside and out) for many reasons. One is smoking is considered to be a dirty habit by most people, two passive smoking is just as bad if not worse than smoking, smoke shortens and damages equipment for example computers, higher risks of accidents like fires, loss of work time because of smoking activities and difficulties in hiring/keeping employees that are sensitive to smoking.
Specifically, implementation of rules is on the overall safety of each and every person within the workplace. Unfortunately, there will be people who feel triumphant and those who feel discriminated against and defeated. The manufacturers, distributors, and retailers who sell tobacco and now the e-cigarette that creates a vapor for the customer, feel defeated as they and the customers continue to receive push-back from those who do not smoke. Allowing the use of e-cigarettes in the workplace creates a double edge knife for the employer. In defense of the e-cigarette user production will not diminish, and the person will be more enjoyable to be around, since they are able to receive their nicotine addiction. On the other hand, for the worker who does not smoke, while there is still evidence Trtchounian, Williams & Talbot (2010) the vapors released from the e-cigarette and the smoke exhaled by the smoker, possess a health risk to others purely on the chemicals used within the e-cigarette. Moreover, further findings indicate the non-cancer exposure of nicotine and propylene glycol still exceed the minimum of 1.0 parts, which creates a health risk for anyone who inhales the smoke exhaled from another person (Offermann, Francis (Bud), 2014). Any time a person’s actions in the workplace can possibly bring pain and
During this clip of “Young Frankenstein” there were a few HR issues that I observed. The first issue I observed was smoking in the workplace. The issue of smoking in the workplace is the impact of second-hand smoke, which could affect the health of other employees and the comfort of non-smokers. People who are non-smokers usually don’t like the smell of cigarette smoke and this could make them unconfutable, which could lead to irritation or even a violent dispute as shown in the clip.
Should cigarette smoking be banned for everyone in the United States? Why? Why not? Should those who chose their time smoking to relieve stress, personal enjoyment, or simply just because, have to lose their right to what makes them happy? Smoking tobacco products has been around for decades and in many different forms. Should personal rights be pushed aside to please those around us that disagree with the so called “disgusting habit”? In the paper The Washington Times an article caught my interest called”D.C. seeks bans on smoking in national parks” written by Steven Dinan. In this article he stated that “Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton wrote Park Service Regional Director Steve Whitesell saying she’s heard from constituents who fear
I will be discussing the topic why smoking should be banned in the workplace (inside and outside). I’ll be covering the loss of productivity in the workplace and the benefits of a smoke free workplace. In my opinion smoking should be banned in the workplace because the productivity is what makes a business and the benefits are a healthier and safer environment producing a better corporate image.
Smoking is an expensive habit. People who smoke cigarettes can spend as much as $2,500 a year on them. Smokers’ claim that it helps relax them and it releases stress but the negative aspects of smoking outweigh the positive. Smoking is a health hazard for smokers and non-smokers. Smokers should have the right to choose what to do with their own health but they should respect non-smokers. Many people believe that there are good and bad outcomes from smoking. I believe that smoking is bad and that it should be banned.
Nicotine is highly addictive, which is one of the reasons why it is so dangerous. The nicotine withdrawals a person might go through can be one of the biggest reasons they cannot/will not quit. Smokers may know the dangers it causes, but have too much difficulty quitting and it is no longer an option for them. They may decide to continue smoking, accepting the risks simply because of the psychological and physical traumas quitting takes them through. One of the employees fired by Weyco in Michigan due to its ban on smoking, Cara Stiffler, spoke out about the policy. She strongly disagrees with the ban and she believes that quitting smoking is a fight about personal liberty. She says “I want to quit, but I want it to be on my terms, not someone forcing me to make that
