Culture may be viewed as the values, beliefs, systems of language, communication, and practices that people share in common and that can be used to define them as a collective (Cole, 2019). Organizational culture is therefore elements that guide these values, behaviors, beliefs, and assumptions of an organization and its members. It includes the beliefs values, and assumptions of individual members as well as that of the organization. It is important that organization leaders create a positive organizational structure which meets the demands of the competitive environment, the expectations of the stakeholders as well as the career satisfaction of the employees (Cultural Intelligence for Leaders, 2012 Chapter 2). How does an organization accurately identify the elements of its own culture? Organizations can accurately identify the elements of its own culture with the use of the model of value dimensions created by Hofstede. This will help them to understand the Culture and make sense of culture. The organization should assess the dimensions; identity, power, uncertainty, gender, and time to get a clear understanding of the culture. The dimension allows for one to view the perspective of their culture as well as how others perceive theirs (Cultural Intelligence for Leaders, 2012 Chapter 2). How does it go about promoting critical awareness of culture among its personnel? Cultural awareness in simple term is understanding and recognizing an organization's culture. The organization can use several methods to promote cultural awareness including the use of continuous training which can help to increase the cultural knowledge of their personnel. The organization should also establish its three pillars namely mission vision and values. According to Hotmart (2019) it is the integration of these pillars that it’s possible to develop a culture with a strong purpose, engaged and inspiring, making all employees work in together. Knowing how to communicate whether verbally or nonverbally will considerably reduce the cultural gap. Management should lead with understanding and empathy, also motivate and
encourage personnel to observe each other to determine their various cultural differences in their environment and respect each other cultural differences (Moran, 2021). Does cultural awareness play a role in organizational success? Cultural awareness as highlighted above is understanding and recognizing different cultures which plays a vital role in an organization's success. In global economy, intercultural teams have become the norm, and with it comes the countless benefits of cultural awareness. Example to conduct negotiations involving foreign allies, the basic level of culturally appropriate communication and nonverbal business etiquette is required. Cultural awareness increases trust enhances work relationships and develops projects. Most importantly it improves communication which is the primary elements required for any successful team (Loehr, 2017). As it relates to the company’s employee’s cultural awareness creates a sense of recognition regardless of their background. Having an environment where team members are aware of their cultural differences and respect one another’s differences results in an overwhelmingly positive impact on commitment (Loehr, 2017). Is a global organization, in the 21st century, obligated to provide opportunities for its employees to become more culturally sensitive or increase their cultural awareness through an understanding of the cultural system of values, assumptions, and symbols? It is my belief that organizations have a duty to provide opportunities for their employees to develop cultural awareness through an understanding of the cultural systems of values symbols and assumptions. This would result in creating a work environment with motivated employees, which can translate to a successful organization hereby opening avenues to expand globally or even create and maintain a competitive edge. Organizations’ also need to introduce culture training sessions to guarantee that all employees can identify the values of the organization and promote cultural awareness among its employees.
