Chapter 9, Problem 1Q
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for the effectiveness of the Hirsch funnel over Buchner funnel for small scale vacuum filtration should be determined.

Concept introduction:

Filtration is a physical process that is used to separate solid matter from a liquid by the addition of a filter medium through which only the liquid can pass. Vacuum filtration is one of the types of filtration technique that is used for rapid and complete separation of solids from a liquid.

Explanation of Solution

Vacuum filtration technique can be done by the use of funnels with flat, perforated and porous surfaces that holds the filter paper. Hirsch and Buchner's funnel are used for vacuum filtration.

The Hirsch funnel is smaller than the Buchner funnel and has a smaller surface area of the plate that holds the filter paper. The loss of the product is less in the Hirsch funnel. Therefore, Hirsch funnel is more effective than the Buchner funnel in micro-scale vacuum filtration to obtain the separated component with any loss.
