Interpretation:
The molar mass of a gas when time taken by oxygen gas and this gas to effuse is
Concept Introduction:
Graham’s law states that the rate of effusion of gases varies inversely to the square root of its molar mass. Mathematically it can be stated as follows:
Here,
Another relation that describes the rate of effusion in terms of the time required by a particular gas to effuse is given as follows:
Here,
Therefore the gases that have greater rates of effusion will require lesser time for effusion out of a hole compared to a gas that has smaller rates of effusion.

- If 4.83 mL of an unknown gas effuses through a hole in a plate in the same time it takes 9.23 mL of argon, Ar, to effuse through the same hole under the same conditions, what is the molecular weight of the unknown gas?arrow_forwardTwo identical He-filled balloons, each with a volume of 20 L, are allowed to rise into the atmosphere. One rises to an altitude of 3000 m while the other rises to 6000 m. a Assuming that the balloons are at the same temperature, which balloon has the greater volume? b What information would you need in order to calculate the volume of each of the balloons at their respective heights?arrow_forward
