Chapter 57, Problem 1Q
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

Describe enrichment.

Introduction:

A culture or growth media are either solid or liquid media that support the growth of microorganisms. There are different types of media depending on the composition of media such as complex, minimal and enrichment media. Complex media is a media contains the growth of wild type or prototroph. Minimal media are used to distinguish auxotroph and prototroph in a genetic study.

Explanation of Solution

An enrichment media is media that contain nutrients that are specific and hence, essential for the growth of one type of organism. The enrichment media allows the growth of a selected microorganism. At the same time, it inhibits the growth of other microorganisms. It is similar to the selective growth medium. Enrichment media are used to increase the number of the desired organisms to a detectable range.

It may happen sometimes that the bacteria of interest may get lost in a large population of other bacterial populations. Enrichment media are often used for soil and fecal samples. Hydrocarbon rich media are an enrichment medium, which allows the growth and hence, helps in the identification of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. Similarly, salt-rich agar is used for the isolation of halophiles.

Conclusion

Thus, An enrichment media is media that contain nutrients that are specific and hence, essential for the growth of one type of organism.
