Chapter 5.2, Problem 1CS
Summary Introduction

To explain: The reason for the importance of transmembrane protein in the cell-cell binding and cell-matrix binding.

Introduction: The transmembrane proteins traverse from one end of the membrane to the other end. These proteins are embedded inside the phospholipid bilayer and are organized in such a way that their hydrophobic body lies in the middle region while the outer side of the membrane contains polar amino groups.

Compare/contrast different types of cell junctions• Are they cell-to-cell or cell-to-extracellular matrix?• What are their general functions?• If they facilitate signaling, how do they do it?• What proteins form junctions? Are they attached to cytoskeletal proteins? If so, which?• How stable are they relative to one another?• What happens if these proteins don’t function properly (i.e., if cell junctions break down)?
Describe experiments using marker molecules that have been done to elucidate important properties of (1) tight junctions and (2) gap junctions.
Focal adhesion complex attachment to extracellular matrix molecules is mediated by:   heterodimers of alpha-integrin and beta integrin     homodimers of classical cafherins     The force of gravity   actin filaments
