Chapter 5, Problem 1P

A link in a mechanism is made from a round bar having a diameter of 10.0 mm. It is subjected to a tensile force that varies from 3500 to 500 N in a cyclical fashion as the mechanism runs.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The minimum stress, maximum stress, mean stress, stress ratio, and alternating stress.

Answer to Problem 1P

Maximum stress is 44.6 MPa

Minimum stress is 6.37 MPa

Mean stress is 25.5 MPa

Alternating stress = 19.11 MPa

Stress ratio is 0.143

Explanation of Solution

Given Information:

Diameter of the bar, D = 10 mm

Maximum tensile force = Pmax=3500N

Minimum tensile force = Pmin=500N

Area of the bar, A

  A=π4D2=π4(102)=78.54 mm2

Stress in the bar is defined as,

  Stress=LoadArea

For maximum stress,

  σmax=PmaxA=350078.54=44.6 N/mm2=44.6 MPa

For minimum stress,

  σmin=PminA=50078.54=6.37 N/mm2=6.37 MPa

Mean stress, σm

  σm=σmax+σmin2=44.6+6.372=25.5 MPa

Alternating stress, σa

  σa=σmaxσmin2=44.66.372=19.11 MPa

Stress Ratio, R

  R=σminσmax=6.3744.6=0.143

A holding fixture for a workpiece 37.5 mm thick at the clamp locations is being designed. The detail of one of the clamps is shown in the figure. A spring is required to drive the clamp upward when removing the workpiece with a starting force of 45 N. The clamp screw has an M10x1.25 thread. Allow a diametral clearance of 1.25 mm between it and the uncompressed spring. It is further specified that the free length of the spring should be Lo ≤ 48 mm, the solid height L, S 31.5 mm, and the safety factor when closed solid should be n, 21.2. Starting with d=2 mm, design a suitable helical coil compression spring for this fixture. For A227 HD steel, wire diameters are available in 0.2-mm increments between 0.2 to 3.2 mm. The following figure shows a belt brake system operating on a brake drum of the hoisting mechanism. It consists of a cylinder with a diameter of 325 mm, the end of which is the elastic belt connected to both ends of the elastic belt by a crank arm articulated at B and the angle of rotation = 225 degrees. And the coefficient of friction is 0.3 and the latching force is f. Find the necessary F to generate a torque of 350 on the cylinder while it is rotating in the direction shown? Note that s = c = 135mm a = 500mm. 35mm
In a bolted joint two members are connected with an axial tightening force of 2200 N. If the bolt used has metric threads of 4 mm pitch, the torque required for achieving the tightening force is
