Chapter 4.5, Problem 20P
Summary Introduction
To use: The solver table to find the respective solutions for different changes and identify if these solutions sell any crude oils that are left over.
Linear programming:
It is a mathematical modeling procedure where a linear function is maximized or minimized subject to certain constraints. This method is widely useful in making a quantitative analysis which is essential for making important business decisions.

There are two companies manufacturing drones. Company A manufactures mass market drones, while company B manufactures customised drones according to customers’ requirements. In 2020, company A produces 3,200 drones, 3% of which were found to be defective and cannot pass the quality check. Company A employs 5 workers working an average of 8 hours a day in the drone production, and they worked 200 working days in 2020.In contrast, company B produces 900 drones, 10% of which were found to be defective and cannot pass the quality check. Company B employs 3 workers working an average of 6 hours a day in the drone production, and they worked 170 days in 2020.
(a) If the drone manufacturing is seen as a process, what is considered as the output of the production processes of companies A and B and why?
(b) Measure the single-factor manpower productivity for the two companies.
(c) Is it reasonable to compare the manpower productivity of the two companies and reach a conclusion that one company…
FRUIT COMPUTER COMPANY
Fruit Computer Company manufactures memory chips in batches of ten chips. From past experience, Fruit knows that 80% of all batches contain 10% (1 out of 10) defective chips, and 20% of all batches contain 50% (5 out of 10) defective chips. If a good (that is, 10% defective) batch of chips is sent to the next stage of production, processing costs of $4000 are incurred, and if a bad batch (50% defective) is sent on to the next stage of production, processing costs of $16000 are incurred. Fruit also has the alternative of reworking a batch at a cost of $4000. A reworked batch is sure to be a good batch. Alternatively, for a cost of $400, Fruit can test one chip from each batch in an attempt to determine whether the batch is defective.
QUESTIONS
1.Determine a strategy so Fruit can minimize the expected total cost per batch.
2.Compute the EVSI and EVPI.

- Seas Beginning sells clothing by mail order. An important question is when to strike a customer from the companys mailing list. At present, the company strikes a customer from its mailing list if a customer fails to order from six consecutive catalogs. The company wants to know whether striking a customer from its list after a customer fails to order from four consecutive catalogs results in a higher profit per customer. The following data are available: If a customer placed an order the last time she received a catalog, then there is a 20% chance she will order from the next catalog. If a customer last placed an order one catalog ago, there is a 16% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order two catalogs ago, there is a 12% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order three catalogs ago, there is an 8% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order four catalogs ago, there is a 4% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. If a customer last placed an order five catalogs ago, there is a 2% chance she will order from the next catalog she receives. It costs 2 to send a catalog, and the average profit per order is 30. Assume a customer has just placed an order. To maximize expected profit per customer, would Seas Beginning make more money canceling such a customer after six nonorders or four nonorders?arrow_forwardAssume the demand for a companys drug Wozac during the current year is 50,000, and assume demand will grow at 5% a year. If the company builds a plant that can produce x units of Wozac per year, it will cost 16x. Each unit of Wozac is sold for 3. Each unit of Wozac produced incurs a variable production cost of 0.20. It costs 0.40 per year to operate a unit of capacity. Determine how large a Wozac plant the company should build to maximize its expected profit over the next 10 years.arrow_forwardIn an oil company, its south refinery produces per day 300 barrels of high grade oil, 200 barrels of medium grade oil and 150 barrels of low grade oil. The cost of operation of this refinery amounts to P 600,000 per day. The north refinery of the company produces each day 100 barrels of high grade oil and 100 barrels of medium-grade oil and 150 of low-grade oil. Which has a total of P500,000 operational costs. If the company’s production requirement is at least 900 barrels for high-grade oil, 800 barrels for medium-grade oil, and 750 for low-grade oil, how many days, are required for each refinery to operate to obtain the minimum cost?arrow_forward
- fi Auto mobile company manufactures cars and trucks. Each vehicle must be processed in the paint shop and body assembly shop. If the paint shop were only painting trucks, then 80 per day could be painted. If the paint shop were only painting cars, then 120 per day could be painted. If the body shop were only producing cars, then it could process 100 per day. If the body shop were only producing trucks, then it could process 100 per day. The present market value for the lathe is $18,000. The expected decline in market value is $1,700/year to a minimum market value of $4,080; maintenance plus operating costs for the lathe equal $4,470/year.A new turret lathe can be purchased for $46,000 and will have an expected life of 8 years. The market value for the turret lathe is expected to equal $46,000(0.70)k at the end of year k. Annual maintenance and operating cost is expected to equal $1,900. Excelsior's television advertising budget is $111,000. Morning time costs $3000/min, afternoon time costs $1000/min, and evening (prime) time costs $12,000/min. Because of previous commitments, KAOS cannot offer Excelsior more than 6 min of prime time or more than a total of 25 min of advertising time over the 2 weeks in which the commercials are to be run. KAOS estimates that morning commercials are seen by 200,000 people, afternoon commercials are seen by 100,000 people, and evening commercials are seen by 600,000 people. How much morning, afternoon, and evening advertising time should Excelsior buy to maximize exposure of its commercials? morning min afternoon min evening minarrow_forwardA retail store sold in the month of April 5,000 products that produced $45,000 in sales. - Thomas has eight horses averaging 1,400 pounds. They are on 20 acres of orchard grass and clover. Each year, Thomas applied 30-30-30 units of fertilizer per acre using 46-0-0 urea at $408 per ton, 18-46-0 DAP at $496 per ton, and 0-0-60 muriate of potash at $506 per ton. He reseeded with 10 pounds per acre of orchard grass at $1.19 per pound and 2 pounds per acre of clover at $3.18 per pound. The horses are housed in a barn 34 feet wide with stalls 12 by 12 feet on each side and a 10-foot aisle down the center. The annual requirement is 20,000 units. A supplier is able to supply the parts for $10 per piece. The firm estimates that it costs $600 to prepare the contract with the supplier. To make the parts in-house, the firm must invest $50,000 in capital equipment, and the firm estimates that it costs $8 per piece to make the parts in-house. Assuming that cost is the only criterion, use breakeven analysis to determine whether the firm should make or buy the item. 1. What is the breakeven quantity? 2. Should the manufacturer Make or Buy? 3. What is the cost savings using your decision in number 2 (above)? Show the total cost for each scenario then the savings amount.arrow_forward
