Chapter 37.6, Problem 1CYL
Summary Introduction

To explain:

Why the immune response to the first exposure to a microbe is relatively slow, and why responses to future infections by the same microbe are much faster.

Introduction:

Defense system involves innate and adaptive immunity. Innate immune response is the immediate response initiated within seconds of pathogen exposure and it targets the groups of pathogens. Adaptive immune response is generated after 3-4 days of pathogen exposure and targets the specific pathogen.

4)  A patient has their spleen removed due to an accident.  How will this affect the immune response? 5)  You come in contact with staphylococci through a cut.  What cellular features will the immune cells recognize? 6)  Name two opsonins and how do these molecules help the immune response? 7)  Fever is part of the inflammatory process.   What is the role of fever during an immune response? 8)  This chemical is used to induce anti-viral responses in cells to protect the cells from viral infections. 9)  This complement activation pathway is activated when complement binds to an antibody bound to antigens.
Suppose a patient is suffered by fever with inflammation.  What will be the biomarkers to detect that disease? Please explain at your own words.
Explain why the type of innate immune response used by the host during an infection is dependent upon the particular location in which the pathogen resides.
