Chapter 37.3, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction
To write:
About the energetic cost of nutrient absorption from the meal.
Introduction:
We consume carbohydrates in the form of energy it can be in the form of cellulose and polysaccharides starch from plants and glycogen is ingested from animals. The other simple carbohydrates such as fructose and glucose are absorbed from the fruits, and lactose from milk. Almost all these are digested inside the small intestine along with amylase found in the mouth and pancreas. The disaccharides maltose is digested with the help of amylase along with lactose and sucrose and break down into monosaccharides like glucose, galactose, and fructose.

A deer eats 25kg of herbaceous material per day. The herbaceous material is approximately 20% dry matter(DM) and has an energy content of 10MJ. (kg DM^-1). Of the total energy ingested per day, 25% is excreted as undigested material. Of the 75% that is digested, 80% is lost to metabolic waste products and heat. The remaining 20% is converted to body tissue. How many MJ are converted to tissue on daily basis? Calculate the percentage of energy consumed that is converted to body tissue. Draw a schematic of energy balance.
Digestion is the first stage in the extraction of energy from food, but no useful energy is acquired during this stage. Why is digestion considered a stage in energy extraction?
You perform an analysis of carbohydrate content of animal feed for a non-ruminant foregut fermenter using the Van Soest Method. Being a non-ruminant foregut digester, the animal in your care does not have the high fermentive capacity of ruminant animals. Which of the following feeds (A, B, C, D) would most likely be the best source of carbohydrates for this animal? (CCF = cell content fraction, NDF = neutral detergent fiber, ADF = acid detergent fiber
Select one:
a.
50% CCF, 0% NDF, 50% ADF
b.
5% CCF, 45% NDF, 50% ADF
c.
12.5% CCF, 12.5% NDF, 75% ADF
d.
45% CCF, 30% NDF, 25% ADF
