Chapter 31.4, Problem 8P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Draw the structure of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate).

Concept introduction:

PET is also known as Dacron or Terylene and it is the best example of polyester. This is generally formed by the reaction of ethylene gylcol and 1, 4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (terephthalic acid) at a high temperature in the range of 420K to 450K. The catalyst used for this reaction is zinc acetate antimony trioxide which enhances the rate of reaction.

PET is also the best example of condensation polymerization as it is generated by the condensation of two monomer units.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has received much recent attention because the lactic acid monomer [CH3CH(OH)COOH] from which it is made can be obtained from carbohydrates rather than petroleum. This makes PLA a more “environmentally friendly” polyester. Draw the structure of PLA
Poly(ethylene terephthalate), or PET, is a polyester used to make soft-drink bottles. It is prepared by reaction of ethylene glycol with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (terephthalic acid). Draw the structure of PET.
Glyptal® resin makes a strong, solid polymer matrix for electronic parts. Glyptal is made from terephthalic acid and glycerol. Draw the structure of Glyptal, and explain its remarkable strength and rigidity.
