Math in Your: Life: Between the Numbers
Validity of surveys. Reread the Math in Your Life on page 73. Suggest other questions that you think should be answered before we can accept the results of the survey. What factors might skew the results of the survey?
Math in Your: Life: Between the Numbers It Ain’t Necessarily So
Although the surveys we present in this section are obviously artificial, you often encounter results of real surveys in the popular media. How can trust their results?
A TV sports talk show that I often watch surveys viewers every day who express their opinions by contacting the show’s website. They “vote” on whether or not we should build a new stadium, fire the coach, draft a new quarterback, etc. How seriously can we take the results of such a survey? Who is voting? Do they represent the whole population of the city? If such questions are not answered, you should be sceptical of the survey and realize that with regard to the results, “It ain’t necessarily so!”
