Interpretation: The Lewis electron dot structures for
Concept introduction:
Lewis dot structure: For a given molecule, the bonding concerning the atoms and also the lone pairs can be shown by the diagram.
In this structure a single bond is represented by one dot pair and double bond is represented by two dot pairs and so on.
VSEPR Theory [Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory]:
Geometry of the molecules can be predicted using VSEPR Theory. It is based on the number of electron pairs around the central atom of the molecule. Depending upon the bond pairs and lone pairs, geometries can be classified as linear, bent, pyramidal, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, octahedral and so on.

- Use the indicated average bond enthalpies to estimate the change in enthalpy, ΔHo, for the reaction between methane and iodine to produce iodomethane and hydrogen iodide: CH4(g) + I2(g) → CH3I(g) + HI(g) ΔHo = ? It may be helpful to draw the Lewis electron dot structure for each reactant and product; all reactants and products have single bonds. average bond enthalpies (kJ) C - H 413 , C - I 240 , H - I 299 , I - I 151 Express your answer in units of kilojoules, but do not include the units on your submitted answer.arrow_forward4a Assume that worldwide combustion of fossil fuel accounts for an energy use of 500 x 1015 kJ/year. Also, assume that all fossil fuels can be represented by the formula C3H5 with energy content of 32,500 kJ/kg.Finally, assume that air is 79% N2 and 21% O2 , and has a molecular weight of 29 kg/kmol. i. Estimate the annual release of CO2 to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, in kg/yr ii. If all that CO2 entered the atmosphere (and none was removed), estimate the increase in atmospheric concentration, in ppm by volume. Jet A fuel is kerosene based, consisting primarily of CnH2n+2 hydrocarbons, with n = 6 to 16, so the Carbon:Hydrogen ratio is close to 1:2. During this flight , how much CO2 (in kg) was released into the atmosphere? (assume the combustion of fuel was complete, so all fuel was converted into H2O and CO2).arrow_forward

Table 6.2 ( Sec. 6-6b), estimate the enthalpy change for the industrial synthesis of methanol by the catalyzed reaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen.arrow_forward4. Photochemical smog is a type of air pollution in the troposphere of our planet produced when sunlight acts upon motor vehicle exhaust gases to form harmful substances such as ozone (O3). For example, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) reacts with atmospheric oxygen (O2) in the presence of light to produce ozone (O3) and nitrogen monoxide (NO).arrow_forwardDefine the Ground-level ozone, which is the primary component of smog, forms when HC and NOx react in the presence of sunlight on hot, calm days.arrow_forward
