The molecular formula of
Concept introduction:
In the bond line formula, the labels for individual carbon atoms are omitted. The bonds between carbon atoms are shown by lines. Thus, each line has one carbon atom at each end unless some other atom is shown.
The electrons shared by the atom are counted, and if the octet of the atom is incomplete, then the number of electrons required to complete the octet are determined. These electrons are shown as unshared electrons pairs.
To determine the molecular formula, the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms is counted. Other atoms, if any, are counted and written in alphabetical order.
The number of atoms of each element is written as a subscript.

(Neglect any work involved in inhaling.) (b) Using the AG value for ATP hydrolysis, what is the minimum number of moles of ATP you will utilize per day just in breathing?arrow_forwardFor a given acid HA, it was determined that at pH 6.0 the concentration of the conjugate base [A] was 0.075 M and the acid [HA] was 0.025 M. What percent of this acid is ionized at pH 6.0? What is the pKa of this acid? What pH would this acid be 50% lonized?arrow_forwardIn our cells, the energy released from the oxidation of the food we eat is stored in the form of a "high-energy" compound called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is composed of + + adenine, ribose, and 2 phosphate groups O adenine, ribose, and 3 phosphate groups O thymine, ribose, and 3 phosphate groups adenine, galactose, and 3 phosphate groupsarrow_forward
- The first step of the metabolic process known as glycolysis is the conversion of glucose to glucose- 6-phosphate. This process has a positive value for rG' Glucose + Pi Glucose-6-phosphate + H2O rG' = +13.8 kJ/mol-rxn This reaction is coupled to the hydrolysis of ATP ATP + H2O ADP + Pi rG' = -30.5 kJ/mol-rxn What is the sum of these two equations and the value of rG' for the coupled reaction? Is the coupled reaction product-favored at equilibrium?arrow_forwardCalculate the maximum number of ATPs that could be created from ADP and PI. These drugs can each pick up electrons from specific intermediates in the pathway as shown above. You treat cells carrying out respiration with either a saturating dose of drug A or B, so that all the electrons which would normally continue along the pathway are captured by the drug in question. Complete the following table. In the presence of drug A, will the rate of ATP synthesis increase, decrease, or stay the same? Explain your reasoning. In the presence of drug B, will the rate of ATP synthesis increase, decrease, or stay the same? Explain your reasoning.arrow_forward
- The free energy released by the hydrolysis of ATP under standard conditions at pH 7.0 is 30.5 kJ/mol. If ATP is hydrolyzed under standard conditions except at pH 5.0, is more or less free energy released? Explainarrow_forwardThe reaction for “activation” of a fatty acid (RCOO−), ATP + CoA + RCOO−⇌ RCOOCoA + AMP + PPi has ΔG°′ = +4.6 kJ · mol−1.
