Concept introduction:
Benzene is subjected to Friedal-Crafts reaction by treating with isopropyl chloride in the presence of AlCl3. The isopropylbenzene is brominated in the benzyl position by reaction with NBS. The bromocompound obtained is treated with phenol in the presence of AlCl3 when a p-substituted phenol is produced. The p-substituted phenol when subjected to another Friedal-Crafts reaction with tert-butylchloride in the presence of AlCl3 will produce MON-0585.
