Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation: The location-allocation problems needs to be described and its difference from the problems previously treated in this chapter needs to be given.
Concept Introduction: In location-allocation problem, a set of locations of facilities are determined, and demand sites are assigned, in such a way that it is to be served by one of these facilities.
(b)
Interpretation: The discrete location problems needs to be described and and its difference from the problems previously treated in this chapter needs to be given.
Concept Introduction: A discrete facility location problem is considered, when a balance has to be achieved between the minimum and maximum number of customers, wherein there is a difference that arises between the allocation of these customers made to every plant.
(c)
Interpretation: The network location problems needs to be described and and its difference from the problems previously treated in this chapter needs to be given.
Concept Introduction: Network location problem is used in situations where the other method of distance calculation has its own limitations.

- Tropical Bliss wants to use an event to promote its new products. The company will however need to decide regarding the location and venue to use for the launch of its exiting new productline. They have developed a payoff table for three locations: Montego-Bay, Kingston, and Mandeville, and have also identified three states of nature (the crowd response / turn-out) Large,Moderate and Low:  Payoffs are profits $000  Crowd Response (State of Nature) Locations Large Moderate Low Montego Bay 850 440 -85 Kingston 750 480 -20 Mandeville 650 550 110 A. What location should Tropical Bliss choose if the MaxiMax criterion is used? B. What location should Tropical Bliss choose if the LaPlace criterion is used? C. Using the MaxiMin criterion, which location should Tropical Bliss choose? D. If the probability of getting out a large crowd is 43%, the probability of getting out a moderate size crowd is 22%, and the probability of getting out a small crowd is 35%.Using expected…arrow_forwardABC Wants to choose the best location for its new aluminium plant. The manager of productions and operations has three possible locations to choose from. His assistant recommends that he use break-even analysis location technique to help determine which location is best based on costs. Design a numerical example in order to demonstrate to the Productions and Operations Manager how break-even analysis can be used in this Demonstrate to the OM manager how to go about choosing the best location using the numerical example you designedarrow_forwardI have two locations where I will be delivering goods. Vaalbara is located at coordinates (10,0) and I have 10 truckloads going to it. Kenorland is located at coordinates (20,20) and I have 40 truckloads going to it. What is the center of gravity's X coordinate? Round to the nearest whole number (e.g. 33.2 -> 33). I have two locations where I will be delivering goods. What is the center of gravity's Y coordinate? Round to the nearest whole number (e.g. 33.2 -> 33). 0*10 + 20*40 = 800. Sum of loads = 50. Y coordinate = 16arrow_forward
- Consider you are an owner of one IT organization with 200 employees and you want to keep track of the location information of each employee. You know that none of the employees will go out from the city and the radius of the city is 50 km. What kind of location measure technique will be appropriate for you to keep rack of continuous location information? Explain with proper justification. Also, show how your chosen location measurement is better than the other ones.arrow_forwardA clothing manufacturer produces women’s clothes at four locations in Mexico. Relative locations have been determined, as shown in the table below. The location of a central shipping point for bolts of cloth must now be determined. Weekly quantities to be shipped to each location are also shown in the table. Determine the coordinates of the location that will minimize distribution costs.arrow_forwardDescribe the four main approaches used to solve the problem location?arrow_forward
- A chain of home health care firms in Louisiana needs to locate a central office from which to conduct internal audits and other periodic reviews of its facilities. These facilities are scattered throughout the state, as detailed in the following table. Each site, except for Houma, will be visited three times each year by a team of workers, who will drive from the central office to the site. Houma will be visited five times a year. Which coordinates represent a good central location for this office? What other factorsmight influence the office location decision? Where would youplace this office? Explain.arrow_forwardIdentify three important factors that a location planner may consider with respect to each of the following: A super-specialty intensive care unit An automobile manufacturing unitarrow_forwardLocation Problem with Two Sites. Oliveira Office Supply has a large retail system consisting of twelve stores spread around the country, often in direct competition with Kilroy. However, managers at Oliveira have decided to use two national distribution centers. When Oliveira's stores are mapped on the same grid as Kilroy's, the store locations occur at the coordinates listed in the following table. As in the previous exercise, there are also data to indicate how many trips are made annually to each store:Coordinates   TripsSite (k)   xk   yk   nk 1     2   96   21 2     5   41   12 3    20   10   20 4    44   48   15 5    60   58   27 6   100    4    8 7   122   94   21 8   138   80   16 9   150   40   1010   170   18   1811   182    2   2512   190   56   14A)Find the optimal location for Oliveira's two distribution centers in this expanded version of the problem.b) What is the optimal value of the objective function?arrow_forward
